Hi, Can anyone give me info on how to dry, cure? and flavour tabacco?
Tabacco is getting so expensive in NZ now. We pay $28.00 for a 50 gram packet and $10.00 for a 20 packet of tailor mades. More and more people are looking at growing there own.
I know, we should be giving up, but.................

Yes, you should give up, but . . . .
Here's a web page for tobacco gardening http://www.raingardens.com/seedpage/tobacco.htm
I don't know if seeds could be shipped to NZ from the US, but assuming you could get seeds there, there is a book listed on this page that could help.
My daughter lives in Kentucky and says that "almost everyone" with a bit of land grows tobacco there because it brings in good money. In Kentucky they start seeds indoors and then transplant out in the fields. You may not have a long enough growing season for tobacco.

Hi, Thanks for the site Quiltedess. Yes you can get the seeds in NZ. I have seen them advertised. The people I know who have grown them, have only gotten a few leaves, maybe that is as you say, because of not a long enough season. Thanks for your help.

There is a research station at Ovens in Victoria in Australia. Maybe you got a garden variety of seeds, I don't know. The research station used to be called the Tobacco Research Station. Ovens is a mountain district, if they get an early frost they sometimes lose some leaves. It should grow about 6' tall.

Helen -- tobacco is very expensive in WA now. The state just increased the cigarette tax by 60 cents a pack and prices range from $5 to over $6 for a pack of 20! HMMMMMM -- maybe I should consider growing tobacco instead of lavender. I live right on a main road and I could set up a roadside stand! LOL!

http://www.albury-wodonga.com/docs/a.htm#Tobacco

Tobacco is dried in a kiln. It takes a few days. This was before they modernised it a bit, it used to be tied onto a stick first, made of teatree, with string. Handfuls were wound onto each side of the stick. The sticks were hung in the kiln. Then there is burley tobacco. The commercial growers get their seed in Ovens because it is disease resistant.

Hi Floral saucer many thanks for the replies. I have seen the info at LSB, as I belong there. There is not alot of tobacco growing in NZ, but some are doing well with the illegal stuff.Mum is in Aussie at the moment,so ahe will bring some back, so much cheaper over your way.
Floral, seeing as you are in Aussie, do you want to join the NZ Chapter of Farmgirls? Seeing as NZ has only me, would be great to get someone else on board down this way? If you are interested drop me an email.

A great oak, is just a little nut which held it's ground.

I haven't been on the board long, and stumbled across it, so you may have to explain what the chapters are. I have been wondering. I can have a little look on the main board I think?
