Hello friends, Just wondering if anyone else is living in an area that is experiencing alot of fires this summer? How are you coping? We've had one fire or another happening all around us since the middle of June... so going on two months now. Luckily these fires are not burning structures; however, in the latest one that is filling our valley up with smoke, there are mandatory evacuations in some of the canyons. I'm finding that I'm becoming lethargic, especially in the evenings when it's "my time" to be outside and gardening. Instead I curl up on the couch for a nap. I'm thinking maybe it's related to having less oxygen in the air now? Anybody have any theories? In addition to the smoke, of course another heat wave is following. 104 predicted today. I never ever thought I'd say I'd be glad for summer to be over, but if it means that lightening strike fires are less likely, I will welcome fall and cooler weather with open arms!

Clare...it has not been a good year in Central and Eastern Washington with all the fires. I agree that the lethargic could be a lack of non-smokey air. 104! Yikes. I promise not to complain about 90 degrees! Is it a dry heat? The days that the humidity is up is just terrible.
It was cooler this morning, hazy overhead and dew on the ground. Walking out to the garden to move the sprinkler, I ran into cobwebs strung from tree to tree. I could handle the haze all day as I need to finish staining the deck (doing a little at a time).
Take care and stay clear of those fires.

Clare, we had big fires here last fall (October) and I know what you are talking about. I agree that the smoke in the air makes you less "active", but I also think that it may have some psychological aspect too.
Keep safe, and be prepared. Sharon

I have not heard anything on the news recently about the fires and their status. Hope they are subsiding and that your energy is returning. I think you may be right about air quality affecting a person's energy. When I have been in polluted big cities I feel lethargic, too. Wish I could send you some of our rain to wash away the fire and smoke! And I am hoping for you and your state that the fires go out and stay out.

The fire danger here in Southern California is high again this year, we haven't gotten to the peak fire season yet. We had a terrible fire here about 10 years ago, the sun was blotted out and the ash fell like snow flakes. I feel so badly for those who have to experience it. PBS had a fascinating show about wildfires last year and i learned a lot about the nature of fire by watching it.
Clare, i found when we were so close to the fire that i was exhausted too but probably in part because i kept running out to check on how close it was getting in case we had to evacuate the livestock before we were told to evacuate ourselves. Sometimes they will not let people back in if they have to make a second trip to get all of their animals out. I also had a "smoke headache" that felt like a heavy weight. Probably just as well that you aren't outside working in the smoke.
Now that we are in the midst of August i will be happy for summer's end. It is very hot here and humid as well because we have the thunderheads rolling in from the Arizona monsoon season. We often get the clouds and humidity but little of the rain :-( We haven't had rain for months and months and would appreciate some (without lightening if we could order it up that way!)
Hope the fires end soon.

We don't have those problems here, but I'll be sure to let you know when we are having a blizzard, come winter! It's been humid here, even a bit cool this summer, with a lot of rain. We are supposed to be getting rain, and are leaving for W. Virginia, where unfortunately, I think we're going to find more rain as we drive south. Hope all's well soon.

It's the 2005 fire season here in the West again. There's a fire burning near Lake Wenatchee, WA called the Dirty Face Fire (named after a cliff). It's been threatening many expensive homes along the lake. I think they've sort of got it under control today.
Think good thoughts for us in and around these beautiful, but highly dangerous fire areas during the summer drought.
Thank you!!

Clare, I think you are suffering from what I call extreme nesters syndrome. When you are threatened by something real yet vague in the sense that it is not an immediate threat to your property yet, just the general area, the nesting syndrome comes out and the sleeping part of it is stress. I used to feel just the same when I lived in Wyoming and we would have these horrible weather storms and tornado watches...you could see the system across the prarie much like you can see the fires smoke... What part of Eastern Washington do you live in? I will be traveling thru that part of the country alot this fall and would like to meet somewhere if you'd like to...Diane |
