I plant elephant garlic every year and it is so easy. It doesnt take up much room and it is not fussy. Good luck!!!

I'm wanting to do Garlic too. I read that you start it in the fall, but is there anyway that I can do it now?

Garlic is best if planted in the fall. Folks in zone 4 and colder do well with spring planted although they can plant in the fall too. It is not too fussy if you plant the right type for you climate. You can go to my website and read more on the page "Growing Garlic" planting and harvest times will vary depending where you live and folks in the north need to plant the garlic deeper than we do if it is going to be in the ground all winter.

Here in Wisconsin, I try to plant garlic around Oct. 12. I did Plant some last year as early as I could in the spring. It turned out fine too. I don't know what type it is though. My sister and sent it to me. Michele

Birdi, I planted MaryJane's hardneck garlic last year. Oh my, oh my, oh my. I had tremendous success and fell in love with the garlic scapes, which you only get from hardneck varities. I planted mine last year later than suggested, but still had super results. This season I ordered early and planted on time. They are up and as cute as can be. You know what else I like about it? I have a part of MaryJane's Farm in my garden. I know we had a thread about it way back when. Try a search in the Garden Forum. Like you, I had never planted garlic before. Now I think of myself as a "garlic gardener." I have a very good book called Growing Great Garlic. Check your library, it's by Ron Engeland. Also, for late planting I have heard of people sprouting the garlic cloves in moisture inside and then planting in the garden. I've never tried it so I don't know if that really works when you want to plant late like you do. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do!

I've planted garlic in the spring here (zone 5) and it did just fine. It does look like weeds when it's first coming up, so be careful not to pull it out! We had a quite a crop of it at my parent's old house. It did just great without any fussing over from us.

Woo Hoo! I should have looked here before I posted my garlic question elsewhere! I'm zone 5 because I'm so close to Lake Michigan, so I'm going to give it a go now. Last year I planted some and my son and I could hardly wait so we kept nibbling the greens! My DH ended up mowing the whole lot and they never recovered. I have a more "protected" location for them in mind. Leave it to my husband...he's the peskiest "garden pest" around!
