As adults we are always learning. Does anyone use raw milk? Can someone tell me the benifits of using raw milk as opposed to milk from the grocer? Is it bad for you if you are trying to reduce your cholesterol.

I use raw milk...quite simply for the taste. I am slim and have on more than one occasion been given a clean bill of health by doctors. My hubby on the other hand has high cholesterol and is over weight, among other problems. He does not drink raw milk. Like everything else, I am sure there are pros and cons to each.

We are pro raw milk. The taste is so much better. and from what I have read it is so much better foryou. With the growth hormones, and stuff they shot the cows up with, you can't tell me it is not in the milk too. Besides all the processing takes out all the good stuff in the milk. Just my opinion though. The one thing I do know is that the big dairies around us, some use the growth hormones, and they sometimes get deformed calves. I don't know the percentage, but what is up with that. I grew up on raw milk, and finally we have it again. |

Our family uses raw milk..have for years..first from our goats and now from our cow (for the past year) Mona's last milking day was a few days ago..I had to BUY milk at the store last night..horrors!! In my opinion raw milk is MUCH more healthy...I will only buy milk when I have to. I have enough butter frozen I think to last during the dry time. That being said..I use raw milk from MY animals..I know what they eat and how clean they are and all that...I don't know if I would feel the same way about raw milk if I weren't so involved in it. I drink one glass of milk a day (well, did when we had raw I don't know if I will with the storebought so much) as I feel it has good health effects. My kids and husband are big milk drinkers..we go through at least a gallon a day...sometimes up to two if they have all they want (they won't while we are using storebought..it will be one gallon per day...period) There is a book I love on the subject called " The Truth about milk "...no, that dosn't sound right..hmmmmm I will think of the name. Anyway, it is written by a man who tells the health benefits of raw milk..I love that book. Dang..will find it and edit this with the correct title and author's name later..it is a good read!

We had Jerseys for many years, and always enjoyed the milk raw. It tastes so superior to cooked (pasteurized) milk! We had to give up our cows but it's hard to find store bought milk that tastes anywhere near as good. After we gave up our cows, it was years before I could tolerate store bought milk of any brand. It was pretty icky after having The Real Deal.
Aunt Jenny's right about knowing where it comes from. There's a person in our area that sells raw milk, but I wouldn't buy it from her; their husbandry is pretty atrocious. |

I started buying raw milk from a co-op I belong to about a year or so ago and am so happy I did - I agree with others who've said that the taste is superior (I'd almost call it a "clean" taste, but that's just me). I actually started thinking about it when I read Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions. You can find other books and links here: http://www.raw-milk-facts.com/selected_books.html. |

The Untold Story of Milk by Ron Schnid is a good book to read up on the benefits of Raw Milk. We can't legally buy it here in NC but I go to SC and buy it from a lovely family. Eight gallons every 2 weeks. It is so tasty and creamy! I even wrote about it on my blog. Lindy

We drink raw goats milk when it's available from a local dairy. Fresh goats milk is very good and doesn't have the after taste that the store bought does. There's a lot of very good nutrients that are killed off during pasteurization. We have found a very reputable place to by it from that is USDA certified. I'm hoping next year to have a successful breading season with our goats so that we can have our very own. We found out a lot about the benefits of raw and fermented foods from the Maker's Diet and he refers to Sally Fallon a lot and uses her recipes.
Blessings

Raw milk all the way! We drink milk from our goats in season and out of season we use the boughten stuff (organic) to make yogurt and keifer. The fermentation covers up the taste diffrence and makes it more digestable.

Yes. Right now we order from http://www.organicpastures.com if you go to their site they have lots of articles on raw milk and the benefits. When we move I will have to find a new source but am hoping I can go back to raw goat milk, or get some does myself!!!

Dr Ron is my doc! I get counsultations on the phone. Someday, I do hope to get to Conn. to see him in person. His book is great! And he has many articles on his website too. His farm is called Grass Farm. We have drunk raw goat milk for 2 yrs. I can't stand it when I have to buy the ultra pasturized at the store like now when the goats at the farms where I buy my milk are dry until they start kidding soon! I won't get my goat until the end of April. We can't buy raw cow milk in AR but legally can get the goat milk. You are allowed to sell 100 gallons a month from your farm.
It is a rule of nature that taking a day off on the farm sets a person back at least a week. Jane Hamilton |

Yes they ship. It's a bit pricey but worth it to me.... the milk comes via UPS. We haven't ever had any problems it's usually still frozen solid or mildly slushy when I get it. BUT we are only 5 hours from Fresno.

How do you go about finding out the laws in your state about selling/buying raw milk from cows or goats? Thanks, Daisy |

I think you can contact your local healthy department and they should know about the laws. I know of a lot of people who don't actually sell the milk because it's illegal, but they let people buy a "share" of their cow or goat and then split the milk. That seems to work pretty well.
I grew up on raw milk and looooove it!

In some states (like NC) animal share is illegal too. If you can get to know somebody who home dairys they may be willing to barter. I have bought "under the table" from friends, but would be very alarmed if a stranger aproached me asking to buy milk.

www.realmilk.com Great site and you can look up your state as well as folks who sell it. You might have to go to another state as we do. It is 120 miles roundtrip. I get 8 gallons and pay $4.00 a gallon. Worth every creamy, sweet, penny! Lindy
