I see that a lot of you make your own bird mixes for feeding the wild birds in your areas. Mind sharing your recipes!? I don't have any of my own, but I feed Niger and mixed seed mostly. All loose. Anyone else?

I also buy loose seed. I tend to use black oil sunflower in the feeders that the squirrels can't get to, and a mix in the others. Oh, and nyjer for the finches, and suet for the woodpeckers and nuthatches. |

I just bought some loose NYJER (just noticing that I was spelling that wrong) seed as well as a bag of mixed seed formulated for finches. i only had a few finches visit my feeder last year, and I think some of that might have been that they didn't notice it until the end of the year. I plan to put some out in the back yard in a area that they seemed to enjoy a lot, and hope that once they see the feed there, they will be attracted to the feeder in the front as well. Plus, I didn't have a lot of plantings that offered good protection and shelter, and this time, I plan to plant some Morning Glory and Moonflower on the fence by the feeders to offer more of the environment that finches enjoy. I also bought a different feeder. Up until now, I've always used the thistle socks, but with the coastal wet, I think that the seed rotted quickly, and that might have also had a part in the birds not coming to feed at the socks. This year, I bought some inexpensive tube feeders to try. I'm hoping that the plastic will keep out the rain enough to keep the seed fresh enough to be eaten before it spoils.
Anyone have a "recipe" for making suet?
