well gurlfrenz, i'd say i had probably a slightly more 'exciting' day than ya'll did today!
hank and i decided to go out to a movie and to dinner this evening .. and hank wanted to stop at a small bank about 7 miles from our home where we have accounts. (he's going to poland and had gone to withdraw a couple thousand dollars cash).
we take his truck (cuz' my van is about out of gas .. i just never watch that needle!) we are parked right in front of the door .. hank goes into the bank. i decided to just sit in the truck and wait for him. i'm sitting in the passenger seat scanning our local newspaper.
.. no sooner is he in the door of the bank .. but i see 'movement' DIRECTLY outside my window on my side of the car .. and turn my head .. and i see a SHOTGUN (RIGHT BY MY WINDOW!!!!) .. i look down the rifle barrel and see a nervous, jumpy man wearing military fatigues (hunting clothes i believe) .. AND he is wearing a MASK over his face. LORD! i realized he was on his way inside the bank to rob it!! he quickly turns around and goes back to his car (which is parked directly behind me!) i push myself back in the seat trying to hide behind the 'window bar' .. and he turns back around and runs into the bank!
i swear .. he was so close .. that had i opened my door .. it would have hit his gun! however, i chose not to try that little trick!
the moment he disappeared into the bank .. i was out of that truck like lightening! i ran to the back of his car to get his lisence .. and the entire back of his car was covered in tape .. no license showing! i run back to the door of his car .. (with the bright idea of stealing his keys .. or locking his car door .. then immediately think 'what if there is an accomplice in the car with a gun!' .. so i run back around the back of the car ... and across the 'country road' .. to a country store .. i swear . .i have NEVER moved that fast in my life! i know he is in the bank with a gun .. and hank is in the bank! I barrel through the door and yell: CALL THE POLICE .. THE BANK IS BEING ROBBED!! a girl calls 911 .. and i run back to the store door just in time to see the robber getting into his car and speeding off! i FLY back across the road to the bank!!
(by the way .. this little bank had been robbed a few months ago .. and the license had been taped over .. and during that robbery he had a GIRL accomplice in another car as a 'look-out' .. i SWEAR .. i thought that at any moment i was going to take a bullet in the back)
the bank manager lets me in and locks the door behind me!
everyone is o.k. .. except the tellers are hysterical! now .. at this bank .. the doors are ALWAYS locked ... and they have to push a button to unlock them to allow each customer to come in. they had just pushed the button for hank. i'm thinking the door had not completely closed before the robber got to it because he walked right in! hank was standing there talking to the bank manager (who is a friend from the rotary club that hank belongs to in our town) about his trip to poland next week .. when in comes the robber .. gun pointed .. and shouting obscenities. There are only three teller windows at this little bank branch .. hank was at the left one .. the robber walked to the middle one and put the shotgun on the counter aimed right at the heart of one of the young women tellers. hank said he was trying to figure out how to 'jump' him .. but was afraid the robber might panic and shoot the teller .. and the bank manager IMMEDIATELY said: GIVE HIM THE MONEY!
Hank said the robber never even looked at him!! He got about $3,500.
(I asked hank if he had gotten HIS money .. he said no .. the teller had not yet given it to him!
I realized later, that had I tried to get his keys from his car .. and if he had not been able to get into the bank .. he would have come out and caught me! AND .. i realized that if i had locked his car door so he could not get in .. he might have shot someone for their car! IT'S ONLY MONEY! So in the long run .. i guess i did the best thing by getting a call into the police while the robbery was in process!
The bank said he was in and out in 38 seconds! But i think that is how much 'video-tape' they had on him .. OR .. i ran a lot faster than i think i can!
Lots of police showed up .. but not before they all went on a chase looking for his car! Even the FBI showed up .. and we were all interviewed and had to write reports of what we observed. Before we left, we were told that they found his car .. but were still looking for him.
We did see the irony of travelling all the way to wildest Africa and returning to our safe little state of Kentucky .. and almost getting shot!
WELL NOW .. how was YOUR day???
oh p.s. we did go on to dinner and a movie!

HOLY TOLEDO, FRANNIE!!!!! I'm SO glad that you and Hank and everyone else are okay!!! Talk about craziness - going around the world and then coming home to THAT!!! I can't even think of what to say - that is absolute nuttiness. AND -- I'm glad that you enjoyed dinner and a movie afterward! What an adventure!

Wow Frannie!! Glad you are both ok and everyone else too! You are sure having an eventful time these days. Glad you are good at retelling us the stories... kept me on my toes to the end! I'll bet the police were happy you have a good recollection of things as well. Hope they find him! Some people are just like those wild animals in Africa. It's jungle out there, just on another playing field. Have to be careful! Not sure I would ever be able to top that one for excitement!

thanks for the thankfulness for a 'safe' ending to this tale! nance .. it is strange but pretty much as soon as i saw that everyone was o.k. .. i calmed down. those poor little teller girls were so upset .. one of them even threw up. An ambulance arrived .. and they were checking everyone's blood pressure .. mine was fine! (but my sugars were up .. ha! but that probably had more to do with the candy i ate before leaving home than the excitement!).
it's funny how i kept replaying 'the ending' in my mind well into the night. i am totally happy with the fact that I did not try to intervene .. i know this is an AWFUL thing to say .. but in small towns where everyone knows and/or is related to everyone else .. I think i would have been more nervous for a long time .. IF i had kept him from getting back into his car and he got caught on the spot .. or while running down the road .. money sack in one hand and gun in the other .. cuz' i'd always be looking over my shoulder wondering if one of his angry 'kith or kin' .. might want to do me in for my 'heroism'! isn't it just awful that that thought even crept into my thoughts! AND WORSE YET .. if out of desperation .. he might have used his gun to hurt someone in order to get away!
ahhhh .. such is life!
and bonnie .. i swear i do believe you are right .. if i don't find some 'excitement' somewhere .. it seems to find me!

i haven't heard any word that he has been caught yet .. but i'm betting it is just a matter of time. hank said armed robbers are extremely desperate and not to be messed with .. especially if you think they are on drugs! and this man was either hopped up on drugs or EXTREMELY scared! he was like a fly on a hot griddle! whew!

HEY KIDS .. i'm heading for 'town' in a few minutes to see what 'trouble' i can conjure up!
what is everyone up to today?
any grande plans for valentine's day or the rest of the month?
honey hunk and our 'son-in-love', frankie .. will be heading for POLAND on Valentine's Day .. they are flying out of Detroit .. so .. i'm driving up with Hank and will take them to the airport and then spend the next two weeks with darlin' daughter, Wednesday, and the 'grandes'. i'll have my laptop with me and will get on-line from time to time.
we leave next tuesday.
have a fun 'valentine angel tea party' on Monday night .. will take pics and share them along with stories! xo

This story was like something on a television show. I am so thankful that you did not get caught in the guys car or in the middle of a shoot-out!!
Good for you for being on guard enough to call the cops and realize what was going on. Glad you got home from Africa safely and that nothing happened to you close to home!

actually, we are here more than it sounds like we are .. but we also have lotsa' little trips .. our retirement home was originally going to be our 'base' home' from which we would do lots of travelling but always have a 'home of our own' to come home to. our travelling is a big part of our retirement .. so much world to see! xo

My goodness, Frannie, you could make a tv show off your life!! I am so glad you are safe and that, short of hysteria, no one was hurt. I think you made the right decision in what you did . . . you did "intervene" by running across the street and having them call 911. To have taken other action might have resulted in terrible tragedy for you or someone else. You were wise. My husband is a paramedic and has dealt with many "crime traumas". He always warns me not to honk at drivers no matter how wrong they are, because he knows the violence that can erupt and in emergencies, he says my first priority is always to call 911 and he pleads with me "no heroics" because that is almost always ausre fire (no pun intended) way to escalate the situation and possibly end in violence. So anyway, I say all that to applaud you that you did the right thing.
I still have no idea how you "watched" a movie after that! I might have been there physically, but there is no way I could have focused on a movie! You are a tough bird, gurlfren!!

thanks gurlfrenz .. i feel surrounded by your care and concern for me. we just never know what life will put in front of us. and when we get these little 'boulders' thrown in our paths .. we can just "TRY" to stay as calm as possible and think fast and true .. and do what our insticts tell us to do. And live with the consequences.
it is so interesting to me that as soon as I knew no one had been hurt/shot/killed .. i was calm and ready to not let this Troubled Person affect my life in a negative way any longer .. maybe 'age' (wisdom, i hope) has a little to do with just learning to 'roll with the punches' sometimes. OH i know there are other things in life that would have me spinning out of control (something bad happening to my family would do it!!) but as long as those we love and care for are o.k. .. nothing else is worth carrying with us for long.
oh .. bear with me gurlfrenz, while i share a story with you that i read many years ago that truly has been a 'guiding light' for me along life's path. now .. i know i won't write it as i read it .. but here in my words .. was a wonderful life-lesson for me that i have indeed carried with me at times of 'perceived trouble' that comes into my life.
There were two Monks in the Mountains of a far-away land who belonged to an Order who had taken a vow to not let the 'outside world' visit upon their own. Therfore, they were to have no interaction with 'the world'.
They were walking near town on a spring day that had recently been filled with rain and the dirt roads had turned to mud. They came to a crossing where a beautiful young Geisha Girl was standing in her dainty shoes and silken robes and it was obvious she was trying to figure out the best way to get to the other side without getting too muddy.
The younger Monk bowed to her and gently picked her up and carried her across the road to the soft green grass on the other side.
He bowed to her again and she returned the bow with a smile.
The Monks walked on.
As they walked along, it was obvious to the younger Monk that his older brother was agitated and upset. After about an hour he turned to his brother and asked: "My brother, is there something bothering you? Your mind seems to be disturbed and far away."
The elder Monk looked back at him with a scowl and rough voice and replied: "We have many years ago signed a vow of separation from the world .. and YOU .. YOU .. YOU picked up that young girl and carried her across the road!!!"
To which the younger Monk gently replied: "My Brother .. I carried that young woman across a road .. but you, my Brother .. have carried her all this way".
WOWZER gurlfrenz .. it was that very moment in life that I 'vowed' to try very hard to not let life's circumstances burden my travels .. to not carry them any further than I absolutely had to. To put them down the moment aafter I have dealt with it the best I can and to let them go.
