i am so excited! our two hens started laying eggs again. we didn't expect it this soon, maybe a little closer to spring, but not this soon. we found one yesterday, and then my husband found six more this morning. they usually lay eggs in the coop, but this afternoon we found that one of them had laid one just out in the fenced-in area. anyone know why the one egg out of the coop?

This doesn't help explain it, but here's an amusing story. My uncle had a chicken that would come to the screen door of the kitchen every morning while my aunt cooked bacon and it would squawk and holler and lay an egg on a pile of carpet in front of the door. Talk about front-door service, or in this case, back door! It liked the smell of bacon. Guess it thought it would contribute a fresh egg to the breakfast effort. ; )

LOL....love the chicken and bacon story, now that is service! Amy, I have no idea either, but the Punxatahney Phil did say that spring would be arriving early this year....I bet the farmgirls in Oswego, NY hope that Phil is correct! Maybe you have a chicken prognosticator! G

I have hens that leg eggs outside now and then..I think the urge just sneaks up on them...or they are neglectant moms or something..haha. How fun that you are getting eggs early. My girls are laying very few right now.

We gave a few chickens too my husbands cousin kids. They had one hen named Auntie. The little girl carried her every where. She would also push in a baby carriage. One day she thought Auntie didn't looks so good so she brought her inside to show her Mom. They were sitting at the kitchen table and she comes over and says Mom Auntie isn't looking to well and thrust the back end of the chicken at her Mom at the same moment the chicken laid an egg right there on the table. I always crack up when I hear that story.
We started up our incubator 3 weeks ago and we had 45 chicks hatch Tuesday. We started early this year because hubby wants to have some ready for the fall show season. Usually it takes until the following spring to have them ready.Maybe I'll take some pics today. Alicia
