This may be a new one for you all. My 13 year old wonderful cat Maya has developed colitis. She has mucous and blood in her stool. The doc says this is common in older cats and he gave me some antibiotics.

She is fine except for nasty stuff coming out of her and she has taken to using my throw rug instead of the litter box which she has NEVER done before. At least I can throw the rug in the washer.

This just has me sick. She only weighs five pounds now and has never been a really healthy cat. She was severely abused when I got her and that is why she is to tiny.

I just ove her to pieces and want to help her in any way I can.

Any suggestions?

Blessed are those who love the soil,

Patsy

I am sorry to hear about your cat and the colitis - what antibiotic did they have her on? Did they give her a drug called Flagyl or generic called metrodiazanole (sp)? It is good for conditions such as that. I wonder if you could ask the vet about giving her some plain or maybe vanilla yogurt to lick that has active yogurt cultures in it? Also any antibiotic will not only take away any bad bacteria but also the good bacteria.
Let me know how it goes- it is hard to see them when they get old and frail - how is her appetite? They gave my old cat a pill to increase his appetite and it worked wonderful - let me know if you need to know the name of it. Spotty had diarrhea almost the last year of his life - I got used to it but kept him on the appetite pills when he needed it, he did get very skinny but we had a lot of quality time in that last year :) so think positive thoughts

I would try getting her some yogurt with active cultures (or organic) - her colin bacterial may be out of order since the medicine and she may need some just to get her back on track

beckels,
just wanted to mention in case no one has, cats in general should not drink cows milk. i am definitely a cat person and never thought anything about feeding cats cows milk until i had a bad experience with one of my cats here. i had fed them cows milk and no problems, but then one of my stray kitties, well, my dh would say they are all stray kitties, suddenly developed scour which was messy and painful for all concerned.
the vet told me that all cats are sensitive to cows milk and should not be given it and that a cat who can tolerate can also suddenly be intolerant to it and get very sick. we do sometimes feed out cats goats milk but that is supposedly a different subject. if you already knew this, or if milk is not any issue in this case, never mind, but i just thought i would mention it just in case it was being given to your little kitty, and i agree, it is very hard to watch our little furry friends when they are in distress.
hope this helps.

love
fran

The antibiotics helped some. She isn't great...but better. She still occasionally goes outside the litter box but not as much. She eats like a horse but doesn't gain any weight. She has always been like that. She has been tested for parasites numerous times. The vet says she is like some humans who can eat and eat and not gain weight. (I wouldn't mind that myself.) But I give her lots of lovins and we will work on it. I am grateful for God for giving her to me and that I have had her as long as I had. Hopefully I will have her for a little while longer.

I tried to get her to lick some plain yogurt. She just turned up her nose at it and walked away.
