I was on my way to go visit Teddie (theoanne) today, when I happened to look down the yard and saw Bear laying in the grass. At first I thought he was dead, but I turned back around to find him with his head up looking at me. I carried him in and called the vet. (After I called Teddie with the sad news) My friend and her husband came over and helped me to get him to the vet. He had been hit by a car, but I have no idea when. He had disappeared yesterday and I did not see him again until this morning. First, he received a quick checking over and a shot of pain killer, then off to another vet for x-rays. He is home now, waiting for tomorrow when it's back to our own vet and a determination of what to do. Poor thing, he is so good. Not a snap or a growl at anyone who tended to him, only whimpering. He is cozied up on a blanket in the family room, with a blanket over his hips to keep them warm. Thankfully, he is resting well and sipping water. Bentley and Rilo are sticking very close to him and keeping him company. How did I get so attached to this dog so fast? I feel just horrible that this happened and I have been in tears all day.
I just keep thinking this is my fault. :(

First let me say that I am sending warm, healing thoughts your way! Second, I believe that animals have ways which we as humans will never understand, and how to be available to the human heart so readily in most cases is one of them, so your heart was ready and there he was for you to become attached to, I hope all goes well.

Karin- Please don't blame yourself. Some horrible person hit him and left him. The burden is on whoever did that. Not you. You are the person he came to because he knew you would help and care for him. You're both in my thoughts and prayers.

Karen.
I will be thinking of you and poor Bear. I know it is so hard to think of a sweet animal being in pain. You are a wonderful person to be taking such good care of him. Don't feel guilty. Dogs are very special creatures, humans can learn a lot from them don't you think?

Oh no! i am so sorry to hear of Bear. The poor guy!. I am glad he has you to take care of him. But oh how sad that someone just did that and left him. Shame on them!
Please keep us up to speed on him and his recovery. I will say a prayer for the big ole boy and you too.

Karin, I am just heartbroken for you and for Bear. Please keep us posted. About you feeling guilty, don't forget to show yourself the same compassion you would show a friend. About Bear, touch calms and heals...touch him as much as you can. I'll be thinking about you.

So sad for Bear, and you. These animals sure do have a way of healing themselves, though--especially if they are loved--their will is so strong to stay with you.
You can't blame yourself, and he knew to bring himself back home so that you would find him.

Keep us posted please.

Hope you both are having a better day today, take care and be glad that he got himself "home" to you. For such a short time, he sure knows where he belongs.

We just came back from the vet. Bear has a fractured vertebrae and the socket of his right femur is fractured as well. If there is no nerve damage from the vertebrae, then they will be able to fix the leg. Apparently this is where the nerves to the bladder and rectum are- so, if he cannot control his bladder or bowels, the vet says he will have to be euthanised. :( As he said, the burden of care is enormous with a dog in that condition. We are keeping him home and quiet for the next week, hoping against all hope that he will be able to do the things he needs to voluntarily. He did have to potty right when we got home, so I am taking that as a good sign! :)
I have to tell you this- I could not lift him up (because I did something to my back yesterday when I carried him into the house) so I took Teddie's suggestion and put him in our large suitcase with wheels and took him to the vet in that. I had to slide him up a board into the truck! They were cracking up at the sight of me wheeling him in to the office! But actually, it was a brilliant idea she had!! So, if you have an injured animal- get out your suitcase!
I am so grateful for each of you keeping Bear in your prayers. I know that Heavenly Father hears each and every one, and He will make sure that the best is done for Bear.

Oh Karen, that's so hard. But it does sound as if Bear's nerve can work! Whew. I'm sending you a cyberhug and prayers.

(((hugs))) to you and Bear! Yes, God does hear our prayers on behalf of our critters; after all, He created them, too!

(Please don't think that the driver may have just left him; I've seen dogs run after being hit and end up blocks away before being found. My own dog did the same thing after running out after a car one afternoon;she was kenneled, but would scale the six foot fence.)

i'm happy your Bear is alive but burdened as well aboutnhis prognosis.

As I'm sure you may know, they do make diapers and special wheel chairs for dogs in these types of conditions. It all depends on the owner's commitments.

Lets hope and pray Bear can knit on his own!!!

Today has been a very good day. bear has maneuvered himself out of his crate and is scooting on the floor to get where he wants to go. ALSO- no worries on the bathroom end- we have taken himout twice and he has done just fine! Thank goodness. I have been praying so hard for him. I'm sure that the pain medication he's on is allowing him to move better, but all in all, any movement will help him get stronger.
I will keep you posted!

Karin - I am sending tons of prayers and hugs your way! It is very hard to watch an animal suffer. That is why I have two kids in the kitchen - it woul d break my hear not to do all that I could. The boys and I will place you in our healing circle and know that the best will be on it's way.
