I'm trying to figure out where to purchase some chicks this year. We want about 50 meat chicks, 3-5 turkeys, 12 plus laying chicks.
-So what's your favorite layers?
-Favorite turkeys?
-Meat chickens?
-Where have you ordered them from?
Thanks for the info. in advance.

-So what's your favorite layers? I always loved the black sex links I had. I know they're not for purists, but they're good layers, pretty, and good dispositions. RIR's a pretty good, too, but I like black chickies best.
-Favorite turkeys?
-Meat chickens? I want to give Freedom Rangers a try this year.
-Where have you ordered them from? Most folks around here order from Murray McMurray. I've only purchased at the feed store because I never buy very many.

Tracey, I've never heard of "Freedom Rangers", I'll check them out. What color of eggs did your black chicks lay?

-So what's your favorite layers? Barred Rocks - but get whatever you like the looks of. A few don't lay well in low light and cold temps, but the usual choice of layers produce just about equally.
-Favorite turkeys? Bourbon Reds. They reproduce, hens raise their poults and are very little work.
-Meat chickens? Barred rock roosters or the freaky hybrids if I don't have BR hens raising clutches.
-Where have you ordered them from? I used to order from McMurray but they're expensive. If I can't find what I want locally I do still order from them.

My favorite layers are the Buff Orphington's I ordered from our local feed store.

I would second Murray McMurray. I've not yet ordered from them, but I've only heard positive feedback and they're catalogs are awesome-- detailed, color photos and info. And you can't beat the selection.

My daughter and I have been perusing McMurray's webpage for a week or two-we should be getting their catalog soon. I've been growing heirloom plants in my garden for a few years and am trying to move to 'heritage' animals. It'll be my first year raising poultry-I'm excited. |

Gals, Thanks for your imput. I'm excited about the Freedom Ranger & found them through a search. That's what we're getting. There's another farmgirl that I'll share them with. They look better the the X's. Haven't decided about the turkey's yet. We've had a variety of layer & the most consistant here for us RIRed's. But I do like the other colors of eggs. Have a great Sunday.

What do you gals know about a good dual-purpose chicken?
One that lays good eggs, but is a heavier bird?
A chicken that would be good for egg and meat?
Thanks Kate

I REALLY like the Buff Orpington for a dual purpose chicken. Kate - since we live in about the same climate - the Buff Orps seem to deal really well with the winter cold, and they are big, calm, nice good egg layers that are tasty, too! That's my vote!

I love Rocks for egg layers. Get a different color every year so it's easy to tell how old they are.
We still buy Cornish X for meat birds.
heritage turkeys. Narraganset is at the top of my list followed by Royal Palms. Then again, i love those bourbon reds and the bronze are so pretty in the sun, as are the blacks .... Now the slates - I love blue birds .... sigh: heritage variety!!
Brahmas are good dual purpose birds

Our 4-H meat chicken project gets chicks from Belt Hatchery in CA (Fresno I think) They are a cornish something cross that grows fast. They turket project kids also get turkeys from them. I would recommend doing some reading or research about raising ckickens and turkeys. There is something about not raising them together or in close proximity. Black spot I think, can't remember. I don't have the space for turkeys so I don't have to worry about it. Good luck.
