Josh has been working for several weeks straight, so I have been home since the beginning of January totally alone all day. I have cleaned everything in the house, I finished paintnig the living room, I installed a few new plumbing things in our bathroom remodeling project(almost done). I cannot find a single needle in this house to sew my duvet cover with. I try really hard not to go to town if I don't really really have to. The laundry is totally caught up. I even took our old brass door bell down from the wall in the hall and polished it with Brasso. I've already got 95% of our tax stuff ready to go to the accountant. I've cleaned my car inside and out, I feed the birds, horses, dogs, and cats. I dont know what else to do with myself. I even get Josh some pajamas and underwear and put them in the bathroom each evening. I've arranged my closets. Cleaned out under the kitchen sink. I feel like such a bum lurking around on the internet, and I don't even know what else to look at online...I really don't want to go outside for too long, it's really cold and extremely windy up here on my hilltop. 
What else is there for me to do? What do ya'll creative girls do when there is NOTHING else to do??

Bake something.
Learn a new skill. What have you always wanted to learn to do?
Surf the net. Read. :)
Honestly, there are any number of craft projects on a list in my head that I could do if I couldn't think of anything else to do. I only wish I had the time to do them! :) |

I love reading-I can get so wrapped up in a book that my boyfriend has to say my name several times to get my attention.
I also found some books on nature journaling and started a nature journal. It's become sort of a "log" of what the weather is doing, what critters and birds are around, what the trees and plants are like at different seasons during different years. It's really neat to look back a few years to see what things were like.
And, to echo Persephone, learning a new skill. I just took up knitting this past fall, and now I only wish I had more time for it!

I honestly NEVER feel bored..I love when I can find time to work on something, or read or learn something new, or just watch the chickens, or Mona. I with there were alot more hours in the day!! Jennifer...I need to be better about writing in my journal for sure..a nature journal is such a nice idea~!~~

If I feel I'm bored, I get on the treadmill, hang laundry out, write, sing- whatever pops into my head!

| Wow...I'm exhausted just reading this...go to the library and get out a dance tape or DVD and learn it (try belly dancing), learn a craft you've always wanted to try...start writing your life story in a journal...retype all your recipes and put clip art on the pages (I'm in the process of doing this now)...go through seed catalogs and clip out the pictures of what you want to grow and put them in a notebook along with a drawing of your garden...find an old Girl Scout handbook and earn some badges... |

| Echoing what the other gals have said; keep a journal (always interesting to look back and see what you were thinking at the moment) and start a garden journal, bake, read, sing, learn something new. Other than that, Cristine, come and be bored at MY house!!!!!! You are a WHIZ, gal pal!! Nance |

Oh I love the girlscout handbook idea! That is fantastic. I always have about 17,000 different craft projects going on so if I get bored I always try to pick on up and finish it. Or I start a new one! LOL! Usually my life is SOOOOO busy that if I feel bored I try to sit back and enjoy it because it doesn't happen very often! Right now I teach full time and am taking 9 graduate hours. I have class 3 nights a week. My husband is working on his doctorate and is also taking 9 hours so he has class on Tueday nights and two saturdays on one saturday off. I have bee going with him to his class on tuesdays (it's 75 miles away) so we can at least spend some time together in the car on the way. While there I go to the computer lab and work on the homework for my classes! I could use some boredom!

There are classes you can take online. Check with your local community college - if they have online classes, you can usually even order the books online as well and have them shipped. There are also some great places online to take classes - do a search for "online classes" or "free online classes"... I learned a lot about computer programming that way!
Knit or crochet.
OOOH.... Wouldn't it be fun to create some FARM GIRL Badges??? I'd love to have a Farm Girl Handbook and earn some badges...

Cool idea -- the Farmgirl series of badges!
Somewhere around here I have an old Girl Scout Handbook from the late 30's or early 40's - it was my aunt's. They had badges for cooking, badges for raising plants, badges for taking care of animals, badges for sewing, badges for knitting -- then I also have a much more current handbook from the 90's when my girls were in the Scouts, - there is one badge - Food, Fibers and Farming....

OK here's some more ideas -
Bake a pie and take it to the next-door neighbor and introduce yourself. Volunteer at your local elementary school for helping in reading classes. Find out who your neighbors are, if you don't know them, by doing research at the county seat in the tax asessor's office (get a plat map) Find out if you have elderly neighbors who might need checking in on in the cold weather (or need their drive snowplowed, or a trip to the store for medications, groceries, etc.) Volunteer to be on the local library board or "friends of the library" group. Join a garden club. Volunteer to be a 4-H or Scout leader or assistant. Draw. Learn to play the guitar. Write up next year's business plan for your business. Visit someone in a nursing home or hospital. Scrapbooking.

Life is full of new things - everyone here has given great ideas. Rejoice in your freedom of being able to choose a new path of interest. And write! Write about your life, about your ancestors, about your feelings. Bake goodies and take them to someone who needs them. Look to people who need help. Those are never in short supply. And pray.
My mom used to tell me "Only boring people are bored." I thought that was kind of a cruel thing to say, but it did make me think.....and it made me happy to be in a position that I could choose a new interest.

I crave bordom! Life just gets too busy and crazy around here, running our Real Estate Guide, doing my Antique Show and Antique Booth, raising 3 boys, raising pigs, driving hours everyday for the kids who are in a school far from where we live, being active in church and having all our extended family in town. But I do think you have gotten some great suggestions. Think about something you have always wanted to do but never have and start pursuing that. And if you are still bored, come pay me a visit . . . I'll keep you busy! LOL!

Cristine, I'm in the same boat you are, sort of. I stopped working last Nov. and began watching my grandmother (giving her meds, cooking for her and making sure she does her exercises) a few days a week, while my parents were working. While I was there, I would bring stationary and write thank you cards, letters and I brought my stamping stuff to make birthday cards for upcoming birthdays. Now, she's going to a nursing home so I won't have that to busy myself much longer. Like you, I have repainted my living room and will now start tearing off the wallpaper in my dining room and sand the woodwork to paint that! If I was in the mood to sew, I would finish the two quilts I started years ago, LOL! I could always put the zillions of pictures I have in a photo album, or scrap book them. How about learning a new language? I read the other day that people who are bi-lingual have a slower rate of the onset of dementia. Geez, where did I put that tape and book for learning Italian?? I took the class a few years ago, but can't remember much of it. I like the Farm girl badge idea too, we could have one for making an Apron! If you like kids, maybe you could offer to babysit for a neighbor.
I'm going to see if I can volunteer to do guidance lessons in the elementary schools here so I can earn hours to keep up my certification. I also contracted to do tutoring with Club Z, but I don't have any students yet. If it was summer, it would be much easier wouldn't it??
I'd rather live my life with a "full plate" than an empty one. Life is not a rehearsal... eat up! |

 My lord but you are busy people. Now that I am disabled I do whatever I want when I want. Start a prayer chain, read your favorite book again or start a new one. Keep a book reading journal. Like everyone above has said time to learn something new. Cook several meals and pop them in the freezer for another busy time. What has your heart always wanted to do? I myself love old movies and have joined netflix to feed that habit. Do yoga and meditate. Enrich your spirit by painting or looking at clouds. Write letters to relatives and catch up, do volunteer work. I like that best. I am sure you can come up with something from all of our ideas. E-mail all the birthday farm girls. God Bless!

I think the idea is a good one. I was showing my daughter this idea, and the "you can do it" website that someone shared. And she says to me.."how would you earn farmgirl badges?" and I told her... "that she was already well on her way"..at age 15 she has already begun to start a small business for herself. She has already sown her first apron. I have been teaching her to cook. She is very crafty...etc.
So, yes..those of us with young ladies that we are raising...and shoot, even us "grown up girls"(grinz) would enjoy the challenge of working towards a few goals that included a simple little self reward/badge system.I think it's a cool idea...and would be quite fun.

I, too love the badge idea!! How fun! How about placing the badges on an apron instead of a sash? I am always interested in learning something new so I am never bored...
I have to say my mother always considered the word (bored) to be a "four-letter" word...

The idea of badges is wonderful. I am never board. Like Julie I also have a million projects started and 5 million more waiting to be started. Aunt Jenny, I wish there was more hours everyday too. I do some times, but very rarely sit down on the couch with some comfort food, turn on the TV, just sit and be still. I love the bubble bath idea. Baking a pie or bread would be good too. Mmmmmmm......

Frankly Cristine, I think you deserve a nap!  After your nap, come right on over & help me get my laundry caught up...etc.
Sometimes I don't feel like doing the things that are available to me, but I don't really get bored. If it gets too quiet here someone usually starts yowling "Mooooooooooooom"...and it's all over. I'm honestly more likely to pray for solitude than be bored.
But...the gals here sure are full of good ideas! Bet you found something to do in all of that!
