Melanie, check out Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton. They have a terrific birthing center. The quality of life here is wonderful, and we work hard to keep it that way.

Thanks, Persephone You have a lovely name -- and she's one of my favorite goddesses. :-)

It's taken us almost 13 years to get the place liveable and there's still plenty of room for improvement, but I have to say we made a good choice moving here.

I see you're fairly new to posting here. Don't be a stranger!

OK, I don't have a farm -- but here's my suburban 'farmhouse', photo taken Oct 10 after our first snow this winter:

You're house is sure a beauty, Rosemary. I especially admire your large front porch. And I would appreciate your advice/opinion on something concerning porches in general. I had a similar porch built on the front of our old farmhouse last summer(from a photo of the Walton's front porch I downloaded). But I didn't have a railing built because I couldn't decide:1. how tall I wanted it and also 2. When sitting in a chair on said porch, would a railing obstruct whatever view is out there? So if you wouldn't mind sharing, : How tall is your railing and does it get in the way of seeing your beautiful plantings? I know this may sound silly and trivial, but I've never had a decent porch before.

Janice, I'm happy to give you my perspective. Based on a 1947 photo given to us by a woman who was born in our house shortly after it was built in 1911, it didn't originally have a railing. My guess is it was added back in the 1970s, when a previous owner put in the plumbing and electricity. Here's that photo, in case you're curious about the previous look of the place. The original owners, who built the place by hand, were still living there at the time.

I think you could go either way with your porch, based on your personal preference. Mine is for the railing. For one thing, the porch is up 18 inches or so from the ground in some places. It could be easy for a visitor to be chit-chatting, not paying attention, and wind up falling! Or similarly, people might think they could just hop off the porch anywhere they felt like, damaging some of our plantings in the process. Friends are more important than plantings, but still....

I don't think the railing interferes with our enjoyment of the view; if anything, it encourages greater appreciation. I often find myself drawn to the railing rather than the table or wicker armchairs. Standing there, with the railing as a convenient place to set down my iced tea glass and garden gloves, I listen to birds, watch leaves rustle in the treetops, and so on. When seated, I tend to focus on just what's in front of me. I guess without the railing, I could let my attention wander "out there" more, but it's hard to say.

BTW, the real Waltons property isn't all that far from us. I've even had myself an ice cream at the drug store soda fountain in Mount Jackson! :-)

OOOHHHH, Rosemary, you lucky girl! You have actual pictures of your house 'back in the day'! I've tried asking around to find an old photo, but so far, no luck! :( And being close to the actual Walton property!!! Be still my heart! You pretty much covered my pro and con arguments. Mine is farther up off the ground, so no people will be jumping, but DOGS, however are quite another story.....BTW - my farmhouse had wiring(1918), but nobody ever thought plumbing was important! LOL Well, I still can't decide, but thanks for your post and sharing your photo and opinions. I can see myself in your description of yourself on the porch...iced tea glass and gloves laid aside, listening to the birds. When the carpenters were building my porch, I told them it was as important to me as any 'room' inside the house - it's where I begin and end my days at the farm.

I'm so happy to see Rosemary's farmhouse!!! I'm sorry that I couldn't get it to work, either, until this moment, when I finally got it to post and then realized that you all had it worked out already!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!! What a treasure...

"Backchannel" means e-mail me off-list. Sorry. I picked that up from a fountain pen collectors message board and assumed everyone was using it but me ;-).

Rosemary, I love the old photo! Our house was built new, but I've got some old pics of the home where my grandmother was born. Too cool to have heirloom photos like that! I'm sure your family treasures the before and afters you've got.

Well, given that the "heirloom" photo of our house was taken in 1947 -- ACK! THE YEAR I WAS BORN! -- I don't know how much of a treasure it is ;-) But it sure is interesting to see how it looked back then, in the ancient of days, when dinosaurs roamed the earth ;-)

I hope others will post photos of their houses, or at least favorite garden plots or critters. I think this is so much fun!

Thank you! I love taking pictures of the things that grow in my yard. I plan to take some closeups of my vegis this year too. I didn't really do that much last year.
