Oh my, I just found an old cross stitch project I started probably 15 or more years ago. It is almost finished and I did a pretty good job on it. But, it is old and dingy looking. Is there a way to save this? Clean it some way? And, then how does one match the thread at this point? There is very little cross stitching left to do. Any suggestions? And, one more question, what do you do with cross stitch samplers besides hang them? Any ideas?

I have made pillows out of a few of them. I will take some pictures tomorrow and post them on my blog.

I turned some dingy old pillowcases into pristine white cases. It didn't even affect the embroidery on them. Nancy Jo was the recipient of a pair of them. I got the tips from Mary Janes Lifebook. Just take some water and add an oxygen powdered cleanser....like "oxyclean" I think I used sunbright...it was cheaper. I soaked the cases for about 4 or 5 days, turning them ever once in a while, then washed them on gentle when I took them out of the soak. They turned out beautifully. I have a photo of it in the archives of my blog. A before and after shot.

Here is a link to my blog so you can see the before and after:

Oh and one more thing. Sunshine...here on MJ's...is an expert in matching old flosses, threads, etc. That is her profession!
Hope this helps,

I used Oxyclean on some VERY dingy and greasy old embriodered tea towels. Soaked them for about an hour...every thing came out. I have used Oxyclean, making a paste and put it right on spots and they came out.

A paste of white vinegar, baking soda and Dreft works really well on old linens. Apply to tough spots and then allow to soak overnight in a basin of tepid water, then rinse. Repeat if needed and dry in the sunshine. It's great for vintage linens and very gentle to old fibers.
I once saw someone use parts of a sampler on a jacket, largest piece on the back and some on the pockets. VERY clever, but I could never cut one up after all that work!
