Hi Everyone;
My mother recently mailed me a copy of the MaryJanes Farm Magazine, and called to tell me how much I would enjoy it....Of course, My name is Mary Jane.
My family and I moved to an old farm house with approx 400 acres last year. The house and barn need alot of work, but as I told my other half, I am wanting a working farm by summer. Last year we did raise some chickens and turkeys, and I cannot emphasize enough that there is NO comparison to those that would be bought in a store. My daughter bought herlself a calf at auction last summer, and he will be butchered this fall. My girls (laying hens)give me enough eggs that family and friends are always asking for eggs and tell me that, again, No comparison.
I make butter now and then with the milk that I sneak from my father in law (he lives not too far).
I am always looking for ideas and suggestions, and look forward to reading any and all from anyone.

I am not sure if this will work, but I am trying...
There are a couple of pictures, so take a look and let me know if you can view them.
EmmJay or Mary Jane is fine, as long as it is not nasty, I will answer...

Hi Cindy;
I was just checking other forums out, and when I came back noticed your reply. I am only a half hour drive from Prince Edward Island, home of Anne of Green Gables. When I get back there (Not in Winter) I will take some pictures for you. It is almost as nice as Nova Scotia...

I am fairly new to the area, so I am not sure of the population. In Amherst (I am outside of town) there are approx 30 000 people.
I truly think that Nova Scotia is one of those places that people fall in love with. My mother came to visit last summer and rather that going to cities, we went to the ocean and dug clams, and found old things around the land here, even a wooden washing maching. One of the first wringer washers....

Not much snow this year.....YET!
We did have alot of wind overnight and cold. I thought my old bed would roll out the side of the house with the wind.

Welcome Emmjay! Your pictures are beautiful. My husband and I both want to visit Nova Scotia someday. We're waiting for our 3.5 year old son to be less of a handful first. Keep the pictures coming. Enjoy your fresh eggs, chicken and turkey. I envy you!

Hi Dawn;
There is no time like the present!
My husband's daughter has two step sons (twins)and when they were here over the summer, I could only watch in amazement. They were three at the time, and dad was worried about them getting into things. I advised to let them go and explore, and when they were done, they both were to tuckered out, they sat down and fell asleep.
I look forward to anyone coming to see Nova Scotia. My mom came last summer as well and I cannot wait for her to return.

I added just a couple more pictures to the site.
Max is no longer here, as he was requested by a family member, and we now have a new one named George.

Welcome EmmJay, I'm an MJ too (but it's Meghan Jane!)
I'm secretly enamoured with the east coast. I am so glad that you have fallen in love with the place. It looks so lovely, and is a lot more established than out here. (Lots more old houses and farms out there) I would love to visit the maritimes sometime soon. Fella and I are seriously thinking of jumping ship out here (the house prices are intolerable!) and heading back east- Ontario or farther..
Great to have another canuck round here... once again welcome!

Hi Meggie;
I see that you are thinking Ontario (or further) I came from Ontario several years ago, but my family is still there. The housing costs there are (my opinion) way too high.
My mother lives outside of North Bay, and it is not too bad there, but southern Ontario is nuts. My sister bought a home for $200 000. and there is less than an acre of land. Water is in a tank under the front lawn and has to be brought in by truck. To say the least, I was shocked when I realized what they did for water.
I am used to the old fashion well on one's property.

Yeah, southern Ontario can be pretty crazy - that's where I lived when I was little and all my family's out there still. My grandma lives on a heritage farm along the grand river (beeyootiful!) and they always end up having to buy water every summer to fill up the cistern. But.. it's still a lot less spendy than out here. I'm in the lower mainland/fraser valley of BC and older bungalows (on less than an acre) on my street, go for 400,000 to 500,000 bucks. Total craziness. It is beautiful out here, but gosh darn it, I want to have room for chickens, lol!

EmmJay, Welcome aboard. Glad to have you join us. I love your pixs and expecially ones of Leroy and Snowman. I's say it was love at first sight. I use to live way up in Maine. I bet it gets colder there though.

Hello, EmmJay. I like your clever screen name. One of these days I'm hoping to visit the Maritimes Provinces. I hope you won't be offended by this, but since I live right up against the shore of Lake Ontario and over to the side from the Adirondacks, it always seems fantastical to me that there's a whole other country up there beyond the water and the mountains that form the edge of our map. Visiting Montreal for the first time was more exciting to me than crossing the Rockies. You're even farther up and away than that!
