Hey Farmgirls~ I am jumping in here today to remind our regulars and tell our newcomers that September 1st starts our Second Annual Farmgirl Apple Festival. For those of you who are new here, last year we started a new holiday, here at MJF, with a month long Apple Festival in September. We share our favorite apple recipes, apple trees we might have at our homes, work on our own MJF Apple Badge, and share apple stories and other fun activities. The month ends with our own homegrown holiday ; Apple Pie Sunday. It is always the last Sunday of the month of September and this year it will be September 25, 2016.
OUR WINNER FOR THE GIVEAWAY IS nndairy!! Congratulations Heather and I hope you enjoy your apple goodies. Your package ships this morning!!
Memories and TidBits you might remember or want to know!
Did you know and remember that MaryJane has our Mascot Apple tree? Yep, it is a 100 year old tree on her farm and you can see it on the cover of the current MJF magazine.
We have a fun Apple Badge you can work on. I just love the apple graphic on the badge!
There are several links under Farm Kitchen from last year so check them out and read about what we did together.
Did you know that the Japanese developed the "Fuji" apple from the Colonial favorite Ralls-Genet and a Red Delicious? It is now the third most favorite commercial apple grown and available in grocery stores here in the US.
This year, I will be going to England on September 12 so if anyone would like to host an apple themed swap here at the farm, it would be a lot of fun. Since I am gone so much, I cannot do it this year.
However................
To kick off this upcoming special MJF Festival Month, I am offering an apple themed giveaway. Sign ups start today and go through September 1. September 2, I will select a winner and mail out your package to help you celebrate your month.
I hope you all will start thinking about your favorite ways to eat apples and start sharing with everyone here!!!

My favorite part of apple season is making and canning applesauce and apple butter, along with eating apples whole, sliced with caramel or peanut butter and of course apple pies. Yum, yum!

Hey Winnie, Sign me up please! I'll be out there in the orchard pickin' and grinnin' when the apples are ready. My hubby and I just now came in from a walk through the trees to check them out. It'll be applesauce for sure and probably an apple crisp here and there . . . maybe some put in the freezer. We'll have to see what freezer space looks like by them.
Thanks for hosting this years giveaway! CJ

Sign me up. I already had to canned apple pie filling. Our trees and gardens are off this year. My September apple tree dropped fruit starting in July. Crazy. My Oct. trees dropped two weeks ago. I'm dying to make some apple butter. Anybody have a good method?

Sylvia, I use crockpots to cook my apple butter. It adds such a wonderful fall smell to the house.

Thanks for the reminder Winnie! I've been admiring the apples on the trees waiting for the orchard to open. I've already got MaryJane's pie filling recipe handy (used it for some peaches earlier this summer). Please sign me up for the giveaway.

I'm in! Apples apples apples! My favorite apple treat is simple but delicious - a cold Granny Smith sliced up and dipped in peanut butter. Second fave is when Honeycrisps come on and are on sale - just cold and plain. YUM.

Apple pie, apple crisp, apple pie jam, apple butter, dehydrated apples... all are scrumptious! But I think my favorite part is going with the kids to pick the apples... It is a day away from the "normal" stuff and a day of spending quality time together as a family <3
Thank you Winnie for the opportunity for the giveaway! I love this time of year!!!

Winnie I would love to be entered. Fall is my favorite season. Tho it's much too short some years. Our apple trees did not have the best crop this year. Last year it was plentiful.

The fragrance of apples speaks "autumn" to me. Apples, leaves falling, good memories. As a teen, I picked apples at a local farm. My favorite way to eat an apple is picked fresh from the tree, so crisp! Part of my job as an apple picker was also sorting and making cider. That was great fun, fresh apple cider was yummy too! My favorite apple is the honey crisp. Please sign me up.

I LOVE apples. I like to make Apple Crisp from a recipe my mother used. I am going to try making apple butter this year. I'd like to try making Jam, but that might have to be next year. We'll see how this Fall turns out.
Please sign me up for the giveaway, Winnie.

Thanks for the crock pot idea for apple butter. Yum, triple yum. There's a method of using pie plates, cover with a large piece of foil, slice apples into a bowl and covering the apple slices with the mixture of flour, sugar and spices. Mix up gently and pile into pie plate.Add more or less depending on how high you like your pies. Cover tightly with the foil and freeze. Once completely frozen, remove and put into freezer bags for long term storage. This way you know you have the right amount for a pie. I found several tin pie plates at a thrift store. I have to admit my favorite pie plate is a brown enamel 9". The crust browns so beautifully and the pie is well cooked. Used glass plates for years until I discovered these. They are still made and are available through Amazon.
