I've had a cold/cough since Dec. 23rd. The cold part is much better, but this cough is driving me crazy along with a weird weak feeling. Anyhoo..I hate to go to the Dr., but relented and went today. He prescribed an antibiotic and cough med. I picked it up at the pharmacy and just about fell out right then and there....The cough syrup (Histussin) was $100.62..FOR COUGH SYRUP, and the new fangled one time use antibiotic(Zmax) was $57.88!!!! Thank the Good Lord we have insurance and I paid $30.00 each, but STILL!! I think this is just nuts! My heart goes out to families that don't have insurance. I smell something rotten here. How can a freakin bottle of cough syrup cost a hundred bucks??? Lu

Oh Lu I am sorry you arent feeling well. I hope you will be feeling better soon.
Oh my gosh when it comes to that prescription! The prices are outrageuous. Thankfully I haven't had to buy any prescriptions in years, we have all been pretty healthy. I to feel sorry for those with no insurance.

Wow...I am lucky enough to have insurance now too, but for many many many years didn't. It really makes you have to decide between groceries and medicine..not fair. I agree..no cough syrup should cost $100..for cryin out loud!!!!
I hope you feel way better soon. I usually have to end up taking the Zithromax when I get a cold..I get pneumonia pretty easily and that is about the only one that seems to work for me.

If the cold doesn't knock you off your feet, the cost of the medicine will! What the heck is in that cough medicine anyway? What a racket. :(

Hope you feel better. Prescription prices are outrageous. Hubby has to take so many since his heart attack this summer and I have no idea how we would afford it if we didnt have insurance. It is scary to think about it.

Luzy, So sorry to hear you are sick! I shopped around for prices a while back when my dogs were on prescriptions. Insurance, of course, does not cover furry children's meds. You would not believe the difference from pharmacy to pharmacy. For example, one bottle of pills was $72.00 at Eckerds. The same bottle was less than $15.00 at Wal-Mart. I know some folks boycott Wal-Mart, but I sure don't. I ALWAYS tell people to go to the Wal-Mart pharmacy. Even with insurance coverage, you can save a lot there. I've meant to tell the FarmGirls about that before, I just forget. Hope you get feeling better soon.

Luzy, I hope you feel better soon; paying for expensive medicine will almost give you a setback, won't it?
Just a thought for the future. My pediatrician used to prescribe Histussin HC for coughs, and it worked great. We are on Medicaid because 4 out of 6 have asthma meds. Medicaid didn't pay for Histussin, so he began giving me Tylenol with codeine. I asked him if that wasn't a paid med; yes it was, but it is CHEAPER by far, and kills the cough for a longer amount of time. I had to try it to believe it, but it does indeed work just as well, if not better.
One more thing about both the Histussin and the Tylenol w/codeine. All 6 of my kids have used both, and after three days/nights on either one, they didn't sleep at all for the next night or two.

LuAnn - Sorry you are under the weather and had to get another jolt at the Rx. We have a 30.00 co pay for formulary and 60.00 copapy for non formulary and that's about enough to give you a heart attack!
Our insurance company (and many others) is trying to counter the Wal Mart/ Target Rx policy (all generics are 6.00) with three months of free generics! I nearly collapsed with joy when I filled my Biaxin and was told it was free. I am now having my migraine meds refilled and my husband cholesterol refilled while I can! How can they charge such exorbatant fees and then give it away....hmmmm, something is definitely rotten in Pharmaceutical/Insurance land!
There may be those of you that don't agree, but universal healthcare should be for EVERYONE. And yes, I will be HAPPY to pay my share, you never know when circumstances may occur and you are the one that needs help. In a country of such extreme wealth, no one should ever be hungry or without proper healthcare. And now you know how I really feel...enough said! Feel better LuAnn, I hear you've got more snow headed your way!!!

Medications are outrageous, they didn't cost so much 10 years ago - before they allowed the ads on TV. I bet the price mostly goes toward the Rx companies' adversiting budgets.
My employer just changed our employee health plan as of Jan 1, now individuals/families have a $2,000.00 annual deductible to meet. It's better than nothing, but not by much.... |

Bramble, I'm with you 100% on the universal health care thing. We're the only "civilized" country on earth that doesn't consider health care to be a fundamental human right guaranteed to every citizen regardless of income.
Get busy on those letters to elected officials and newswpapers, girls!
And let's remember to eat simple healthful foods, get lots of exercise and fresh air, drink lots of clean water, laugh, dance, dream, love, howl at the moon now and then -- you know what I mean. Talk about preventive medicine! |

I am constantly shocked by the cost of medication. How are the eldery affording it? And people without insurance. I have had such bad morning sickness that I have lost 27 pounds (never thought of pregnancy as a weight loss program). They put me on a drug called Zofran my cost is $11 a pill. Some days I have to take 3. My insurance only allows me to get 20 pills at a time. The postion the insurance company pays is $1060. I am not a fan of Wallmart but I'm heading over this morning to check it out. My prenatal vitamins are a $30 copay as are the other 2 medication I take. Between my husband and I we have been out of pocket over $500 each month. Has anyone gone over the border to Canada? I know they often run bus trips from my area just so people can get medication.

Thanks girls for all the well wishes! It really means a lot. Well this AM the antibiotic kicked in = poopies and major nausea. The Dr said the cough med should really help me sleep. I hardly slept at all. I feel wired for sound!! All jittery. Sorry to be such a whiner! There are plenty of people worse off than me and my stupid little cold! I'm just tired of feeling this way and now I'm cranky! Oh ya, BTW I did get my prescription filled at Walmart. I can only guess how much it would have been at another pharmacy!! Take care and be safe. We are getting another snow/ice storm as we speak. Hugs, Lu

Hope you are feeling better soon. Before I was pregnant my Dr. gave me something called Ambien. It was a miracle, I was able to get a great nights sleep with my cold.
