I wanted to officially RE-introduce myself! I joined the Farmgirl Connection last year but got so busy that I was only even able to post once or twice!
Now that my life is a little less crazy, I really wanted to come back, introduce myself and really get to know everyone!
So, my name is Brianna and I am 27 and live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I am a single mother (my daughter is 3) and I have never been married (Perhaps this is due to my Mary Kate Danaher (Remember her from The Quiet Man? ) personality  )
I own a small crochet and knit business. I create items that remind me of the land I live on. I am also a writer. I wrote for a Buddhist magazine for a while but stopped once I became pregnant. Now I am working on a project called Between the Lakes which will document the folklore and tales of the area I live in, along with the customs, food, and people who call it home. I hope to start writing for magazines again.
Oh, other than that I probably watch too much TV. I enjoy reading, learning new crafts and arts, and researching history. I am attempting to learn bobbin lace but am mostly just tangling thread and creatively cursing.

Brianna, welcome back! I do remember you from last year and it is good to hear that you are well and have been really busy with life. The UP of Michigan is a mystery to me from way down here in Florida. What is it like up there? I would love it if you could post some photos of some of the things you make in your business too. We all love to share pictures here so we can get a better idea of what someone is doing.

I will definitely get some photos up today! Thanks for suggesting it, I would have never thought to do it.
It is an interesting place, here. The summers are humid and often hover in the mid-80s (though this year we got a few mid-90s. The land mass is smooshed between 3 of the great lakes so you never have to drive too far to see one. It is also mostly forests out here- pine, maples, oaks, and in the summer you can smell the pine resin and sweet grass in the air. It can be difficult to farm here because of the short summer, but apples, pears, and berries of all sorts flourish here. In the winter, it gets cold and everything is silent. Storms push through and dump feet of snow so you learn how to work with it. Sledding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing are all popular. Even in the dead of winter you can see see amazing natural wonders (like caves with icicles that are 10 feet long!
Fall is the best time. With so many trees, the entire area explodes into color. The nights are cool and the days smell like campfires. There are not many people who live here, but I love it. It can be a hard place to be, especially in January when you feel so far removed but it is home to me and I love it! |

Welcome Brianna! What a beautiful word picture you painted for us to describe where you live. I can not only see it in my minds eye but I can smell it too. The writer in you expressed it so well. I wish I could develop writing skills like that. I have so much to say but the words just don't come out the way I want them to once I try to get them down on paper. I get lost in the memories and the feelings over take me and I stop.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Hey there!
I think the hardest thing is to try to stay afloat when all of those emotions hit you! I always try to remind myself that the memories and emotions that are soaking into my skin can't actually get to me, I own them. I take a break and try again in an hour or so if I am having a really tough time.
I also think it can help to speak your story instead of writing! You can use your phone or buy a recorder and record your memories as they come to you and write them (and edit) later on! That seems to help a lot of people get over the hurdle. |

Brianna, the UP sounds very interesting from your description. I would love to see it in the Summer and Fall with all of the trees and fruit. I hope you can post some photos of those gorgeous maple trees this fall and the apple trees as well. Did you know that September is our Apple Festival Month here at the Forum on MJF?? We talk about and share all sorts of apple related topics, recipes and photos. I hope you will join in the fun!! Plus, the last Sunday of September we have declared as the Annual Apple Pie Sunday here at MJF! I bet you will have many tasty apples to choose from to bake a pie.

Hi, Brianna. Welcome! I love your writer's description, and I now know that I will schedule any visit to the UP to coincide with the days of fall. I am new, and still struggling to find my way around the various threads here, and to become acquainted with everyone. I will look forward to more of your descriptive writing. I am a reader, and sometimes tend to want to do that to the exclusion of everything else!
