My 4 year old daughter Carly has had a couple of UTI's during the past 6 weeks or so and seems to be working on another. I will take her to the doctor again tomorrow if she continues to urinate with such frequency. I have been pushing the water and cranberry juice. Anyone have any herbal suggestions?

Oh..those hurt so bad. I have only had a few in my life but man....!
I would do the yarrow also..and the cranberry juice helps me alot if I use it at the beginning. Poor thing!

Is she taking baths with lots of bubble bath products? That can cause these infections. Also there are some things in the diet that can cause them. Chocolate is one that comes to mind. Laundry detergents is another. Hate to see them in children, bad enough in adults.

I guess there is no discreet way to say this......when she has a #2 makes sure she wipes fromm the front to the back.....if any fecal matter is entered into the urinary tract, that can cause infection too

That seems to be the age for kids to get UTI's. I had two that got them constantly at that age. The water, cranberry juice, and an immune booster like yarrow or echinacea (I use colloidal silver, but many people are uncomfortable with that). Also, (another thing that is hard to say discreetly) with little girls touching themsleves in the private areas is a common cause of UTI, medical professionaly actualy call it fingering infection.

All of you women are so awesome! Thanks for your input and advice. I have started with the yarrow, elimintated bubble baths, definately working on the wiping issue, etc. She is doing better today and not urinating as frequently. I am so grateful to all of you for your suggestions. Carly is doing well and I am thankful for that. We had 6" of snow (which is alot for us in the Northwest) and have had a fun day outside. It is supposed to drop down to the low 20's tonight.

Glad to hear that Carly's UTI seems to be clearing up. One thing we have tried to clear them up is apple cider vineger. Take a few spoonfuls a few times a day. My DD turned her nose up when we told her to do this. After trying it a few times, she got used to the taste & got it on her own since it started to make her feel better. (She is 12 so she was able to pour it herself when she felt she needed to take some) Nice too since it is natural & inexpensive.

Another thing hard to say discreetly, but in this day and age it does come to mind, so I will post this caution as well:
Does your little girl attend daycare or spend time under the supervision of other adults or teenage babysitters? If so, are you getting any bad vibes or instincts that someone might have taken inappropriate actions with her while she is in their care?
Again, something you hate to think about, but as parents it is always better to be proactive and check out all possible environmental hazards, from bubble bath to baddies.

OK, so I guess I shocked everybody with my last post? I am glad to see that it wasn't edited or deleted by the moderators. This is a wonderful forum to share information and learn so much from each other.
One of my sisters keeps a carefully maintained "resource list" of friends and professionals when she is dealing with family issues, from rebellious kids to college recommendations (for the same kid, of course!)
As for me, I've got the FarmGirl Connection! I find it amazing and so reassuring to have at my disposal all of the caring individuals who take the time to read and respond to our rants, fears, accomplishments, or questions in such thorough and thoughtful ways. It's like having an extended family or support group with experience and advice for almost every possible situation, or at least sympathy or empathy when we just need to know someone is listening.

Hmmm...I have one right now, and I cannot stress enough to have her wash her hands! I work at a school where handwashing is difficult when you are dealing with kids...and they are not as fastidious in their hygiene as we would like!! I tried natural methods, but unfortunately, my infection is E. coli...so I am dealing with an antibiotic. Good luck!

Hi All,
Just to let you know, my little Carly is doing much better! I have eliminated bubble baths, kept a much closer eye on her hygene (which is sometimes difficult with little miss independent :>) and given her some echinacea goldenseal. On to being a kid again and not having to spend so much time in the bathroom. Thanks again for your love and support!

If she ever feels one coming on again, I use Alka Selzer. If the two tablets is too strong for a little one, maybe you could use just one tablet. Disolve in water as usual, and have her drink it. Any flavor has worked for me. I used to get these about 5-10 times per year and I eventually could just call the Dr and have her write another Rx, but that got expensive, and the anti-biotics just caused that "other" type of infection. So I searched online for a long time and found Alka Selzer. It worked great, and now I keep it on hand just in case.

Wow...I missed this whole thread....but great advice. One more suggestion I didn't see mentioned. Have her wear cotton panties. No nylon, polyester, silk, etc. Just about all you can find for little girls is the cotton, but just wanted to mention it.
Also, Jo...One must always consider the unpleasant in matters like this. I'm glad you mentioned what you did about daycares...etc. Very important to protect one's kids.

Another thing that can be very irritating is toilet paper. I have gone to a recycled no bleach kind as I break out from mass market TP. I think it's probably mostly the bleach, along with the perfumes, but I know if I ever use bleach in my clothes I break out too. You can get a lil squirt bottle, fill it with warm water, even put the echinacea and golden seal in the water and just rinse her off after she goes potty. Also you may check the kind of laundry soap you are using or any softeners. I hope you can find the cause of her recurrent infections. That is just awful for such a lil one.
