Is there a song that really gets you going? I wrote on my blog this morning the attributes to having such a song. Check it out if you're interested. It's too long to repeat here, but a "theme song" can work wonders for you in a difficult or stressful situation. Do you already one? Is there a song you sing or hum that gives you strength? And, how did it become yours?

Gosh, I have a bunch! One that always comes up when I'm stressed and need peace is Amazing Grace. Just humming a bit gets me back on center.

I remember years ago when I first started showing aggressively, there was a country song I think by Brooks and Dunn called "I'm in a Hurry" and it made me stop and think about what I was doing with my mare, and to chill out a little. The refrain goes like this:

I'm in a hurry to get things done,
I rush and rush until life's no fun.
All I really gotta do is live and die
But I'm in a hurry and don't know why.

Hey, it's gotta be fun or it's not worth doing, right?

I also have a gardening song, a walking in the woods song, a riding trail song, a driving to the show song, a canning song (called "Canning" by Greg Brown ), all sort of favorites that come up at particular times.

Are these the soundtracks to our lives???

Ohmygosh Rebekah...I can't believe you made me watch that video from 1984!! LOL. I remember 1984, though I was just a wee 11. I don't think I wanted to know what that dude looks like though, I liked the cheesy song better before I knew!

My song is "32 Flavors" by Ani DiFranco. She rocks.

But it's also "Bad" by U2, which is not a "bad" song in any way but a song that totally gets me moving and my head thinking each time I hear it. Favorite song of all time. (I still can't figure out why the song is called "Bad" but I know the words by heart and love it all the same.) Something about The Edge's guitar is different than any other guitarist...the U2 sound...love it, love it, love it.

My "theme song" is actually a hymn. "Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel" is my favorite and it is my working song...gardening, or whatever...it always comes to mind.

Put your shoulder to the wheel, push along.
Do your duty with a heart full of song.
We all have work, let no one shirk, put your shoulder to the wheel.

My kids don't enjoy it cuz if they hear me start humming it they know I am ready to work and they will be working too..haha

Well, I have more than one that is for certain. Depends on the situation, "Amazing Grace" has always helped, and "Walking Away A Winner" by Kathy Mattea ... and on and on...I love Beth Hart, Cyndi Lauper, Lucinda Williams, Ani Difranco and so may more!
Okay, I have got to stop!

Jenny- That's a hymn that is sung frequently at our house too!! My theme song would be the hymn "Come, Come ye Saints"

Come, come ye saints, no toil nor labor fear;
But with joy, wend your way.
Though hard to you this journey may appear,
Grace shall be as your day.
'Tis better far for us to strive
Our useless cares from us to drive;
Do this, and joy your hearts will swell-
All is well, all is well.

Oh, I also find myself singing the theme song to Green Acres a lot!!
Green Acre is the place to be ,
Farm living is the life for me,
Land spreading out so far and wide-
Take Manhattan just give me that countryside!!

I just get mesmerized whenever I hear "Clair de Lune" by Debussy; I get trancelike sort of like an alligator having it's belly rubbed. The world disappears momentarily. However, on a more modern note, the song that gets my blood pumping is RESPECT by Aretha Franklin! Fun to see the different music we love....good thread! Nance

I would have to vote "Nocturne" and for non-classical, I pick as a use to be my song, "Meet Virginia" because she is the kind of girl I always saw myself as, and now that I knwo who I am I am only mostly like her. And I always wanted to be named "Virginia".

Well, my husband says my song should be "Outlaw Women" but if you listen to Gretchen Wilson song " Redneck Woman" that's me. You know at alot of the rodeos they play that song for just me when I'm running. It's a long story and a big joke really. Personally i think my song is "I was country when country wasn't cool", by Barbara Mandrell.

Catherine, what can I say? I am still quite traumatized about the whole situation about "my song", really! Sorry you had to suffer through it, but I thought it was a stitch! I sat here in front of the computer with my mouth dropped open. You guys have such great songs! I'm shopping for a new one. I'll check all of yours out.
