Has anyone here figured out how to produce tomatoes (in winter)in your kitchen window? I have a tomato plant I've been working on. I just can't stand grocery store tomatoes and would love to see this guy produce something.

I've never seen much of anyone having luck with that; it too hard to get enough light, and the plants get leggy. Do you have any grow lights?

I'm with you on the grocery store tomatoes. Yick.

I know what you mean about the grocery store tomatoes. I fixed blt's with those just the other day and we ended up pulling out the tomato and just have bacon and lettuce. It was mealy and no taste at all. I wonder if those natural reading lights would be like gro lights. We have two of those, a floor model and a desk model, and I wonder if I would set something under that to grow if it would. I may just try that.

Blessed are those who love the soil,

Patsy

I love seeing that tomato! It reminds me of the song by the group Pink Martini, on the CD by the same name, "Hang on Little Tomato!"

Hey, Karin, Maybe if this guy hangs on we can finally meet and I'll share the taste of summer with you. Libbie, okay, I'm headed to youtube.com to hear that. Maybe if I start singing to him, he'll come through for me. And, Tina, thanks! Keep those vibes coming! I'll keep y'all updated with the news, good or bad!

Good luck with your winter tomato. By the way, can anyone recommend a particular type of heirloom tomato plants for me to grow from seed? I love cherry and grape tomatoes. Also the big beefsteak kind. Is there anything like them among the heirloom varieties?

Yeah, Rebekah! That must be a good sunny exposure for you! Hope it matures and tastes DELICIOUS!

I don't know about window sill tomatoes, but my grandfather certainly sold all he could grow of his greenhouse tomatoes to the two local markets and some restaurants. They paid top dollar for the day and he was always so tickled when he would say "What do you think about them charging 3.99/lb for my tomatoes?" I would just laugh and say "Good thing I'm family!" That might not sound steep now but this was in the late 70's and 80's! I am sure there is a market out there, after he died I was constantly being asked if I was going to continue growing them. Sadly, the property had to be sold, so there went the greenhouses (which even sadder were then torn down).

Thank you Tina for the Aunt Martha's website. I really like the detailed descriptions they give along with the pictures of each type of heirloom tomato. This will be a big help in my choosing what & where to buy my seeds.

I just got a new Territorial seed catalog and was looking at it a few moments ago - they have varieties specifically for pots, and other varieties that will produce fruit without pollination.... Maybe next year I'll try some of those for winter tomatoes!

I just got the newest issue of Mother Earth News & there is an article about having year round tomatoes. The article talks about growing cherry in the house, but you seem to be having luck with yours. Can't remember what type it was, but it has grown so fast! Basically said to have them in a south facing window with lots of sunlight or an overhead fluorescent light.

I had a friend who lived in a near by apartment in California. He grew tomatoes in his bedroom windows and had so many he had to share them, lucky me. So I say, "Grow little tomatoes, grow" God Bless them!

LOL I just had a thought! My husband is a Sheriff's Deputy, and there are busts for pot once in a while. Sometimes, there are plants found growing in the garage... I just had a laugh thinking about what the neighbors will think when they see the red lights glowing through the garage door, and I bring home my plant lighting to grow my Tomatoes in the house! LOL too funny.

I've done it successfully! I had two gorgeous Tiny Tim tomatoes last season. Actually, since I'm a city-farm girl, I've been growing all of my "crops" indoors with a pretty good success rate. I had my tomatoes (and everything else) in eastern windows with no supplemental lighting, and got a respectable harvest. I used to think it was difficult to find container-friendly varieties until I discovered the Seed Savers Exchange-- they have at least 12 varieties of both cherry and full-sized heirloom tomatoes that are determinate at under 3 feet. I've detailed my exploits with the tomatoes and the rest of my farming at my blog (listed in my signature) if anyone gets bored one of these days and wants to mosey on over there.
