I love hollyhocks too! I used to have two houses ago the double peaches & cream variety. They thrived and did great in their sunny area. My last house and this one are on wooded lots, not enough sun for hollyhocks to grow. Keep taking pictures & enjoy your visiting hummingbirds!

I put hollyhocks in last year and they grew, but didn't bloom (first year), and this year they are coming up beautifully. We have had a late spring, so maybe they are a little behind, but I am hoping to see blooms this year!

We have been having a 'Peddlers Fair" going on here in our little town,,, for the memorial day holiday.. and it is fun to watch the tourists as well as the locals admire these ginormous Hollyhocks... as well as watch them taking photos of themselves by the plant...
I dug up 3 of the Hollyhock starts,, only 1 survived and is doing quit well... Fingers crossed that next year I will get 'Hollyhock on steroids'...lol!

I love hollyhocks, but unforuntately, any I've planted have not produced over the years! Hmmmmm . . .
Right now my irises, columbines, snapdragons and salvia are in bloom. One nice thing about what I have is not everything blooms at the same time so I have flowers of some sort in bloom all summer and into early fall.
Soon my peonies will be blooming and they are wonderful!

A little hollyhock info - they're bi-annuals so they bloom the year after you plant them. Since they reseed after the second year you should have a continuous blooming.

I have seen all kinds of hollyhocks but Grace, I do believe those are the tallest ones. My favorite hollyhocks I have grown over the years is 'Outhouse Hollyhocks' I order from Seed Savers. They're a heirloom hollyhock found growing around an old outhouse. And for you too young to know what an outhouse is all I can say is bless your hearts.

Iremember my first time seeing Hollyhocks ... they were growing up infront of a little garden shed..(in Biola. CA..in 1963 on a farm) . and the reason I remember them.. It was also my 1st encounter with a humming bird!
Oh the things we remember... now if only I could remember where I placed my reading glasses!!! Snork giggle!

Wow! Grace, your hollyhocks really have gone nuts this year, I have never seen any so tall! The opposite has happened with mine, they are very stunted this year and the colors are not vibrant as they usually are. I did see your comment above about the heat thinning them out... it has been very hot here, perhaps that is what happened to mine.
