I'm so excited. We had to wait several weeks for our Dr's appointment due to the big storm here. Yesterday we got the good news and all looks great with the baby.
My husband and I are stumped for a name. Any good suggestions. So far I like Sam and he like Allen. Do you just know when you see the baby what to name it.
Any advice for an old first time Mom would be great. I will be 43 when the baby is born.

What wondeful news, when are you due? I was 34 when I had my son and
46 when we had a 7 week old join our family so you are YOUNG!
We couldn't seem to find common ground for names, but just kept putting names we liked in a fish bowl and living with them for awhile. Any ancestoral names or family names that might work?
As for when the baby gets here, you will be fine and we are all here to help!

Great news Laura, those name things can be tricky. I have been partial of late to the name Jackson. Jackson Allen sounds nice, or Samuel Jackson. And its true sometimes you have to wait to see them in person to get the right name. Well keep us posted. I have four Grand daughters, and they didn't want to name any of them Jackson. I do have a bear named Jack.

Laura -- how wonderful! I was 43 when my last one was born. Advice for an older mom -- enjoy your new baby! I found that because I was older I took more time to enjoy my daughter and savored the little every day pleasures. I didn't do that as much with my first one because I was so young. Age gives you that advantage -- you're more settled. But it is also harder sometimes because you get tired. And I've worried how my daughter would feel when I was the oldest mom attending school functions! Steph's never had a problem with it so figure I shouldn't either.
I love the name Sam - Samuel!

Hi Ladies,
Thank you for all the kind words of advice. I am about 5 1/2 months along. As I have been attending some of the birth classes, my husband and I could be the parents of most of the other people in the class. We spend a lot of time laughing.
Love the name Jackson. I can't wait to bring it up to my husband tonight.
Kay how did you do with the storm?? I think we were just about at ground zero for it. Between the evening of the 14th and now, we have spent 15 days without power. Our only real damage was 3/4 of our fencing came down. we are on almost an acre so it will be a big job to put it back up. We are so lucky no trees on our house the neighborhood below ours had 40 houses with trees on them.

WOW! That's great news! Boys are lovely. And Nancy, I love the name Jackson too as that's the name of my almost-one-year-old!
We chose his name the day after we found out he was a boy. It was just right for both of us and we really enjoyed being able to refer to him as "Jackson" or "Jack" during the second half of the pregnancy instead of just "baby." But my brother and his wife knew they were having a boy and waited until he was three or four days old to name him! They really couldn't decide. I think sometimes a baby will look like his or her name, but sometimes you have to make it fit. With us, I figured there was no way that our son could NOT look like a Jackson when be was born since we always called him that and the whole darn world knew his name too!
Whatever you decide, have fun with it! I'm so excited for you!!

P.S. We also liked all of the "E" names that are popular now: Ethan, Elliot (our top choice should we have another son!), Evan, Eli, etc. etc. etc. I LOVED Sam for a name, but it just didn't work with our last name...too many M's all piled up together!

Congratulations Laura! You will have so much fun picking out a name & all the baby things you'll need. You can never imagine them fitting in some of the things you'll get! And then they will still be too big on them.
Like some of the others have said, look to yours & your DH family for names that have special meaning to you...even if you use it for a middle name.
For the time being, you still have lots of time to find a baby name... but when you hear the right one, nothing else will fit or sound right. It will just flow when you say his full name.
I know when my parents had my youngest sister (she's 14 years younger than me), they enjoyed having her at an older age. My dad said you are less stressed & the little things don't bother you. He said he was so much more calm & relaxed. I hope you have the same experience.

Laura, congrats!!!! So glad you survived the storms too, hope you're out of the storm paths now. It must not have been very fun to be 5 1/2 mths prego and without power for so many days. Glad there were no trees on the house though. Samuel Allen is nice too. I do love Jackson too. I have girls (17 & 15) but am your age and I don' think that's to old to be a first time mom at all. Actually you will probably be much better at it!! Enjoy!!!

Congratulations Laura! My 3 sons are 24, 21, and 3 years old (I was 43 when I had him)! My last son, was with my second husband Ali. We choose his name like this: his first name celebrates my Swedish/Danish heritage, his middle name is literary (we both love to read) and his last name is of course his father's. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun choosing your son's name. Take your time, you want to pick something you'll love saying over & over again!

Congratulations, Laura! I have two little boys myself, and I'm 35, so I consider myself in the "older mom" realm, too. It's great! I have SO much more patience than I did when I was younger - AND I feel about, oh, 3 or 4 sometimes when I've been around just the kids all day, so it evens out in the end . Naming my boys was so hard for me - I wanted names that were strong and solid and things that they could be anything career or job-wise with and feel confident introducing themselves. I chose William for my older boy and Arthur for the baby (he's 5 months old already!). I really considered Jack - Catherine, I LOVE that name - but ended up just loving Arthur. Both of their middle names are my maiden name, and their last name is their father's and mine. I was older when my four youngest were born too...although they came into our family by adoption when they were not newborns. I remember sitting in the same Kindergarten class for the parent "tea" the day before my now 5th grade son's first day of school that I sat in 17 years earlier with my oldest son and wondering if I were the oldest there. I would have been 38 when he was born...I was 39 when my youngest was born in '97. I just don't worry about it now..and I do notice that I have more patience than I did with my first two "homemade" kids who were born when I was only 19 and 21!
As for names...I love the name Sam. Always have. All my kids have middle names that are family names...some ordinary and most not. (Lee, Dean, Randolph, Amelia, Averill, Cecile and Timothy..those are the middle names) I am betting you will hear the perfect name and just know.
Congrats..there is nothing so sweet as a baby boy (OR girl)

Congratulations Laura!! Name picking can be difficult and the farmgirls have given you some sage advice. I love the name Sam, it's a good strong name. My boys each have family names for first and middle. As for me, if I had had another boy I would have named him Stuart. And Warren ranks right up there as well. :) I wrote names down and put them on the 'frige. That way I would see them every time I passed by and could take a minute to think about them. Don't worry- you will find just the right name for your little son.

Hi Laura,
Just wanted to add my congratulations and my thoughts.
You may want to explore your heritage and that of your husbands, and see what traditons there are for naming sons...is it the Irish or Scots who have a particular naming convention; first boy is always named after the paternal granfather, next son after maternal grandfather, and on and on in a very specific order.
Two other unusual traditions I know of from friends of mine are:
FIRST: This family has the first son always naming their first son HUGH (going aways back to some original Hugh in the family tree) and the middle name is always the mother's maiden name, ending with their own last name. This can get interesting, especially during the dating phase when the poor prospective bride doesn't have a clue about this. They never call the boy Hugh, though, he is always called by the middle name (mothers' maiden name).
SECOND: This family started doing this a generation or so back, naming the first son with the same initials as the father. So far they have three generations of boys all with the initials ETR. The current generation is carrying it further since they are expecting a second boy; it will be another ETR, as will any additional boys born to them. Girls? they have also decided that any girls will bear the mother's initials. Given Name, Middle Name and Married last name.
So, Laura -- have fun with it! Make it a game, ask for suggestions, write it and say it aloud a ton of times to make sure the full name has a nice flow to it.
And, let us know what you decide!
One final story; (Somebody stop me) I was supposed to be named Laurie if I was a girl. No problem, until my mom laid eyes on me and said: "That's JoAnne."
A month later when her own mother came to visit, she commented on the family name connection, and my mom said No, I just knew that was her name when I saw her. Grandmother said, well, I thought you named her for my parents, Joe and Annie!
So, you never know where the names will come from, just rest assured that the right name will come.

Congratulations, Laura - I am really happy for you!
As for names, I agree with Shelle - it will come to you when you see him. My son is two and he was going to be Samuel, but when we saw him, both my hubby and I said Benjamin at the same time. Quite freaky really, that it came to us both at the same moment.
All the best with the pregnancy - make sure you spoil yourself, you deserve it!

Thanks for all the kind thoughts everyone. I can really feel the baby moving the last few days and it makes it so real. So glad to hear that there are some woman who had babies at my age.
Jayne have you always lived in Australia. My Mum and all of her family are from Australia. We are hoping to take a trip to the Gold Coast this coming November with the baby.

There are just a few things that I read that make me cry with happiness. Someone having a baby is one of them.
I am so excited and happy for you!
This is the sweetest, most wonderful time in a womans life. Oh, I wish that I lived closer to you. Please keep us posted about your pregnancy.

My first born is Steven Nathaniel we call him Nate (Named for a great uncle)
My 2nd son is Wesley Carter ( named for another great uncle)
