Ok I thought I'd start a new topic since it's the beginning of vacation season, and I won't be the only one to share what I did on my vacation.
Kauai is awesome (hey I'm from California that's my excuse for the surfer lingo!), this was my fourth time there and I feel that way every time. My husband wanted to stay on the North shore this visit because it is much more lush and tropical and reminds him of Old Hawaii and visiting his Portugese grandma on Oahu when he was a kid. I didn't really want to stay there because it rains so much, though the touristy area of Poipu does kinda turn me off. Well he was right, it's a very sacred place on the planet, I'm convinced. We went to Queen's bath (not recomended in winter because it gets pretty dangerous), which is a rocky natural pool where the ocean rushes in. The water is warm and deep, full of interesting fish. There was a family of huge sea turtles feeding on the ocean side and in the other pool (where it's too dangerous to swim). We also went snorkeling every where we could, Kee (pronounced Kay ay) beach is wonderful and you can hike up to a lookout that is a sacred Hula temple (I am a long time Hula dancer) when the locals don't block it off for special ceremonies etc. Also, (we didn't do this yet) it is the beginning of the Na Pali coast trail 11 miles of virgin coastline (next trip maybe, as it's a major camping expedition). We took a boat tour out to snorkel near Niihau (the forbidden island, inhabited by only native Hawaiians) and Lehua where we snorkeled with many fish including manta rays and a white tipped reef shark. The boat trip also took us to see the Na Pali coast where we saw spinner dolphins, and more sea turtles. The air there is so perfect, my lungs loved it, now that I'm back in L.A. I have a sore throat. Also my skin is dry and I keep coating myself in coconut lotion. I want to move there so much, my only reservation being that I'm a handspinner and I love working with wool (obviously inappropriate for Kauai). I guess I'll have to improve my cotton spinning techniques. One of my cousins (that live there) told me that the best value for land on the island right now is in the Homesteads in Wailua. I can just see us having a little organic farm to supply local restaurants, and some animals. We can't move yet though, with 4 kids in college we can't spare the income, but that can't last forever.
Aloha! Elizabeth

Sounds like a great vacation! My Boyfriend and I were going to visit Japan this summer, but his mom has become ill, so we will be visitin her in Oklahoma instead. We will head from Chicago to Southern Illinois, to Little Rock to visit some friends of his and his busness interests, then head to Eastern Oklahoma to check out some property to buy, Southern OK to visit his grandma, then the remainder with his Mom in OK city. We will also do some camping while there. Can;t wait. We will be gone from July 2nd to July 19.

Elizabeth, your trip sounds wonderful. I vote for the kids paying for their own college education and you moving now. Oops, wait, maybe that would be not-too-nice. Okay, I'll head back to reality now! :)

Julie, I'm sorry your boyfriend's mother is ill. Hope she's better soon. Camping in Oklahoma in July will certainly be hot, and the ticks are already horrendous, so come prepared. When you're in eastern OK, let me know. Would love to meet you. We'll be around most of the summer, although will probably take the kids to D.C. for some sightseeing at some point and to visit my in-laws, although *why* they're spending the summer in MD rather than in Destin is beyond me!

We are thinking about buying in the Poteau area. Maybe we will have time to visit, I'm not sure. We have a lot of family to visit. It will be great to know someone in the general area once we move there.

No worries. If it doesn't work out this time, it will at some later date.

Take care,
