I would like to hear the bad and good of gardening in straw bales? I am thinking of doing this to get rid of weeds in my garden. Any suggestions or info would be helpful!!

I am doing a straw bale garden this year. Still too early to say much about it.

Here are some pictures of my little greenhouse and my straw bale garden. So far I have tomatoes and peppers in the greenhouse and lettuce, mizuna greens, and beans coming up in the straw bale garden.

So did you cut out some of the straw to add dirt or just added it on top? thank you so much for the pictures. I have a small greenhouse like that but it is in the house cause here in michigan it is still cold and they said we might get some snow still yet. So I start mine in the green house in the house and then after the end of may usually it is ok to put them out. Love yours!!!

I spent about three weeks prepping the bales with water and fertilizer, then I put a layer of potting soil on top. I put a layer of seed starting mix on top of that so the seeds wouldn't disappear into the bale. Since then I've been watering it. Added some fertilizer yesterday. Today I noticed carrot greens poking their heads up. And tiny spinach leaves. I have more peppers in my house under a grow light. and I still need to plant some herbs. I use a fish emulsion fertilizer that is organic. It is spring here. It's almost May, and that means I need to get my a/c looked at. It quit last September, just as the heat was leaving.

Hi - I am in my 3rd year with experimenting. This year I had two bales left from last year so I prepped 4 bales for a total of 6. I have tomatoes and pepper planted - spread straw leaves apart (pulled some straw out), put in potting soil and planted the plants. Have peas growing in last year's straw. Worked fine last year but learned that you have to fertilize more than what I did (and water more too). The first year I burnt my first plants when I planted them too soon and the bales were too hot with fertilizer. I keep plugging on!
Good Luck,
Becky
