I tried to do a search to find if this topic had been discussed before and nothing turned up.

What do you do with your old Christmas cards? I hate to just throw them away. Really beautiful but if I kept them all I would be up to my chin in a couple of years. Need suggestions. I used to send them somewhere, I think it was Colorado, but was told last year they didn't use them anymore.

Thanks,

Blessed are those who love the soil,

Patsy

In gradeschool we made ornaments out of them. I think the Christmas Issue of Martha Stewart Living had instructions for the same type of thing that we made. Also it is possible to reuse them if you want by cutting the front off, gluing it to a blank card front and then adding little personal details, like using rubberstamps, glitter etc. to make your cards for next year. Good Luck!

I cut off the front, and use them to make gift tags for next year-makes the presents very pretty!

For a Sunday school project we would cut out the pictures and put on construction paper and I would then cover in contact paper and the kids would have place mats to take home

I also sometimes buy dollar store frames (or make something simple) and put pretty card front in the frames and hang on the wall for a change of pace or scenery

In sixth grade my teacher taught us to make six-sided baskets, by cutting out shapes from the cards with a template and then glueing two back-to-back, then punching out holes around the edge with a paper-punch and lacing them together with ribbon. The bottom of the basket is a hexagon and the sides look like a slice of bread.

I saw a similar project somewhere in Mary Jane's book or magazines- I can't think which one right now.

Patsy,
IF, and only if, you are wanting to part with cards, I can used those with pictures of smallish faces, old fashion scenes/or victorian scenes. I would be happy to pay postage or send you a little thank you gift in exchange.

I make gift tags, too, and I also cut them apart to make new cards. I buy blank cards/envelopes from the crafts shop and then I cut, design and paste new ones. It is fun and makes the cards personal.

I made the ornamnets from Martha Stewart one year. You take the card front and cut it off. Then, you slice thin sections in one direction (either way works). You use a small hole punch to punch a coordintating hole in each slice at both ends. Then line them up and use a small brad to connect all the top holes and another to connect the bottom holes in order. You fan out the slices to make an adorable "ball" ornament. These make nice gifts to send through the mail and to do as a project with groups (children and/or adults). It is recycled, cheap, easy and pretty!

Here is a link to a pattern for the baskets. It is not Mary Jane's but it is very similar. My sixth-grade teacher had us use a paper punch and curling-type ribbon instead of yarn. http://www.allfreecrafts.com/christmas/card-basket.shtml
