Are there any farmgirls at the fair this weekend in TX?

I am in information overload, but loving every minute. I'm kinda being a geek, too and 'fan-girling' over all the authors/speakers that I admire.

It was wonderful. Over the course of 2 days, there were 132 classes. So sad that I could only be in one class at a time.

My brain is sorting through all the information and experiences. I definitely have some renewed goals and energy along with new ideas to implement.

Catherine how exciting for you. As you sort through the things you learned please pass some of it our way. Especially if it's how to grow and do things in Texas.

Sara, my only complaint is that some of the subject matter didn't apply to Texas. Our climate is just so different and hot compared to the rest of the people they usually talk to. We don't really need to know about wood burning stoves for heat, or extending the growing season or passive heating for your home. We need the opposite...how to stay cool!!

I did come away with tons of info on permaculture, stream lining my farm chores, aquaponics, treating rainwater for drinking, and I bought the coolest little gadget for harvesting okra. I'll post a pic of it later.

Catherine, can you explain the okra gadget? My husband and I grow okra every year. Sounds like you enjoyed the fair.

Marly, It's a ring with a sharp hook on it. It kinda looks like a rooster's spur. It sits in between the top and middle knuckles. There are various sizes to choose from. I've harvested okra with either a knife or scissors/clippers, and those tools can be cumbersome when trying to hold the stalk and cut and load the okra in the basket. So, essentially, the 'knife' is the hook which is attached to the ring that sits firm on your finger. Hold the okra and swipe your fist, with the hook exposed, across the stem and slice it.

I'm gonna take a pic right now and then post it by 8pm.

Thank you, Catherine. Very interesting. I'll have to get one for my hubby. Thanks for the pictures.

Is anyone going to the Mother Earth News Fair in Albany, Oregon? A friend and I are driving down from Victoria, BC. It would be fun to meet up, if anyone else was going to be there. I've been once before and just loved it, came away with so much information, new books, samples, products...

Thanks for the review Catherine. I have seriously been thinking of attending the one in Seven Springs PA during the month of September. It sounds amazing!

Cheers!

It's well worth the time, if you can manage it, Carole.
