I am a very frustrated dollmaker as I have two grandsons - one is 1 year old and the other is 3. Last year I knitted a rabbit and gave it to the three-year-old but I'm not sure he survived, I haven't seen him for a while.
I'd love to make some more toys for the boys but don't want to turn them into girly-men (Ha!)
Any suggestions?

make hackey sacks they are little balls full of beans and things like that, Hmmm while typing I decided that was a bad idea if they break it open choking hazard. I know my husband and I made tool boxes for our nephews one year they seem to like those. We filled them with toy tools.

Hi, Brenda, I posted about this under Sewn Craft Gifts for Boys a while back and got some great ideas. I have one family with 4 kids that I like to make a gift for, and the 3 girls will get a version of Cabin Creek Farm Frannie's Cabin Fever Doll - and so will Joshua, the 5-1/2 year old boy. Someone suggested to make him a farmer boy in overalls and a straw hat, so that is what I am doing for him. The girls will get the little dresses and aprons and Joshua will get the farmer boy. He is the youngest, and this may be the last year I can get away with a doll for him. Two years ago I made a different colonial type doll for the girls, and as I looked at the naked body, I saw that I could paint it to look like Spiderman for Joshua, and he loved it. I made boy dolls in footed pajamas one year for my oldest sons and another year..just a couple years ago (so they were quite a bit older than your grandsons) for my younger boys, and they loved them and slept with them for years.

What about bendable people? Their basic body is made from pipe cleaners and then they have clothes over that. I've seen all kinds of sets- knights, kings, queens and princesses; fairies; trolls; whatever you think they might like. Here are some links on how to make them:

If you have time to check at a library, there's a book called "Felt Wee Folk" by Salley Mavor that details making the tiny dolls. It also has suggestions and patterns to make a royal family, fairies and that sort of thing. (http://www.weefolkstudio.com/)
In one of the catalogs I get, there are bendy people like these... the company also sells what amounts to pieces of wood in lots of shapes (like what might be left over if you build something) for little people to build tree forts and castles for their bendy people. Here's some I found on ebay...

I figure those can be made pretty easily too.
I have a daughter who will be two in February, and I think the bendy dolls would be okay for her to play with, with the little bead for the head being the only choking hazard. I you could also do something with a cloth ball for the head, I think.
For the younger one (and really, for the older one too) you could think about the Waldorf style dolls... I'm making one now for my younger daughter. Here are some simple directions for those:

I've made Raggedy Andy and sock monkeys for little boys. For a little bigger boy---stuffed dinasaurs. The boys also have liked the "village" on rugs or fabric where they can run their matchbox cars. As a mother, I had boys and lots of nephews. Now as a grandmother, I have little girls and nieces. Their both FUN :)

I'm with Terre...Sock monkeys!!!! I think most little boys LOVE sock monkeys! I've also seen other animals made from the sock patterns/kits.

My boys loved monkeys! I can see those being a big hit! And for the record, my guys grew up to be "manly-men"  no worries there!

I found a book at B&N today "Stupid Sock Creatures" it's actually more of a kit - I got it for my stepniece for Christmas - I'd love to open it and look at the directions but maybe I should get my own LOL....

Libbie, Some of the red heal socks come with directions to make a sock monkey. If not, you can Google "instructions for sock monkeys" and a lot of info comes up. Also, you can go to Clubhouse.com, and there's detailed instructions there. Good luck! I think you'll have so much fun.
