I need some help from the glamping crowd. I will try to be as brief as possible.
My husband and I are BLESSED to have been given 50 plus acres of heavily wooded land in rural Indiana. My stepfather bought this property in the mid 80s solely for a firewood source. It is gorgeous, creeks, ground cover, woods, trails, you name it. But completely RAW. No power, very steep access, and only about 1/2 acre cleared.
BUT in the clearing is an old Shasta camper (probably 70's would be my guess). My sis and BIL had this at an Ohio River camp MANY years ago.
The good.. No exterior rust, all windows intact.
The bad ... the interior is a disaster. Bath floor is rotted out. Mice poop everywhere, and yes, I saw a few snake skins.
The roof needs a healthy dose of roof cement.
I am trying to convince hubs to at least gut it, and add flooring and some panelling so at least we have a place to camp and be inside.
We have looked at several other options (cargo containers, SUKUPS, Yurts etc) but the problem is our access. It is VERY steep and trying to bring anything up this drive would likely involve thousands of access improvements.
I look at this Shasta and think for maybe a grand or so we could have a decent place to camp and sleep.
Please all of you glamping gals! HELP! Opinions please!

Lisa, as you know I'm not a camper but I do get inspired when I see a fixer-upper. Go for it!

Lisa, after looking at MaryJane's repair photos, it seems like making this trailer a little get away home could be very possible and worthwhile. I guess my only questions would be how to manage sewage and waste once you repaired the vehicle without running water and a septic system. But then again, you could dig an outhouse too. I am not handy or experienced with the kind of repair work needed on this trailer but if you and hubby have the time and resources, it could be an awesome Summer project and so worth it when it was all completed! Keep us posted on what happens.

I would find comfort in the fact that I had to gut the whole thing. Starting fresh and clean and knowing every inch of the trailer would give me piece of mind. Of course I'm saying this and I don't have to do any of the work! It's already there, you might as well give it a go

Thanks everyone. WOW MaryJane! I KNOW we won't have anything quite so glamorous. That space is sensational.
We have no power(which is what is mainly preventing us from completely moving there; the elec co estimates 30K for hook up.)
Also, no water except for a pond which could be used for bathing etc. We will likely use an outside solar type shower, and the 5 gallon bucket system for a toilet, at least initially. We mainly want something out of the weather that we can add a table, and maybe a futon to sleep on.
So for the moment, we will be gutting, patching, insulating and adding flooring, walls and paint.
We are going there again on Sat (its a 2 hr drive, so it hinders us somewhat).
Our plans Sat are to take a small generator, a huge shop vac, a million paper towels and disinfectant, a crow bar, hammer, drill roof cement, and foam patch. Kind of ambitious for one day, but we shall see.
Also, I am lucky that hubs works for a pharm co and wears the paper suits and masks all day, so he can supply a few of those to protect us from the ickies.
I'll be sure to take some pics.

I am a glamper and have a little trailer that needed mostly cleanup and sprucing up, but not major work. I, personally, was not up to that for the work involved, nor the cost.
HOWEVER, many are and have beautiful results. I think Mary Jane is a good "go-to" for this, as well as is our farmgirl "katmom", Grace Brown.
So, you go girl! You've got my vote! I wish you the best!

Lisa, here is my 2cents worth...
"Show No Fear" and go for it....
But do keep in mind,,, you will have to spend money to spruce it up to be habitable...
we have 4 vtg trailers in vering stages of work... and one, the oldest (1949) will be a ground up restoration... but for now,,, we will be focusing on our 16' Shasta SCS trailer,,, it needs a face lift and a small section in the bathroom needs repair as well as the electrical and plumbing,,, and a paint job outside... but we love our trailers and we just pace ourselves ...so like I said,,, Show No Fear!
this is our little 'Sassy' the day we bought her,,, hubby was putting on new tires so we could bring her home....
