It started January 3rd. We had spent 5-6 hours at the auction barn on the 2nd. When I got up on the 3rd, I felt like I had been hit by a bus. I noticed that my ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, etc were swollen and very painful. At first I thought it was due to sitting too long and it would go away in a couple of days. It's been 4 weeks and it's worse. I am having trouble with my hips, shoulders, lower back,toes and fingers along with the original problems. Even my eyelids are puffy. I went to the doctor. She didn't offer any insight, but ordered a battery of blood tests. Going in this morning to get those done. She's checking for autoimmune issues, thyroid and other things. I'm hoping that its nothing serious.

That is very scary Lora. Praying all turns out well and your body gets back to normal quickly without too much intervention or fuss.

Got part of the results back. Alarmingly low vitamin D and calcium, high cholesterol and high inflammation numbers (duh). Still waiting on some other stuff to come back. I did some research and found one thing that can cause this combo is thyroid issues. The low calcium/vitamin D can cause the high cholesterol. I have to take a super high dose of vitamin D for 10 weeks plus an OTC calcium/vitamin d supplement. I'm not a big milk drinker, but I do eat cheese. I am cutting out white flour and trying to eliminate refined sugar. My weakness is milk chocolate. I like dark chocolate, but it doesn't always like me and gives me headaches.
Not complaining, but this is a lot to deal with since I just started back to school full time and am trying to find a job. I'm already in pain and the doctor told me the Vit D med will most likely cause bone pain. Sucking it up and moving forward. My family depends on me since my DH is out of commission. Asking for positive thoughts if you could.....

Most definitely praying! Is your potassium low by chance? I ask because you sound a lot like me about two years ago..... My blood pressure also skyrocketed. If the doctor does not figure out anything concrete, I highly recommend getting seen by an endocrinologist. Prayers coming your way!

Lora, do you like yogurt? Or do you drink milk if it's mixed with strawberry or chocolate milk? I am not a big milk drinker but I know that mixing it with strawberry milk or making me hot chocolate helps me get more calcium. Just a thought that might help.

Lora, I hope you're doing better than when you posted. I had unexplained swelling in my fingers and pain in my lower back. After a lot of tests, it was determined that I had Psoriatic Arthritis, which is an autoimmune disorder very similar to Rheumatoid Arthritis. I'm cutting most refined sugars, flour, and some dairy (except for half and half in my coffee) because they cause inflammation. I hope you get definitive answers very soon!

After talking with the nurse again about the numbers, My cholesterol was 205 - the max normal range is 200. Trying to find a Rheumatologist - dr is referring me, but trying to find one that is taking new patients close to home. Blood pressure was normal, sodium was low. I had to laugh at that one - just about everyone in my family has hypertension. since I started taking the calcium and vit D - the swelling is starting to lessen, but the pain is still there. They weren't kidding about bone pain.

Went to a rheumatologist this week. She wants xrays and more blood work. She didn't specifically say what she thinks it is, but she did ask if I or anyone in my family has psoriasis. Nobody that I know of. I think she's leaning toward psoriatic arthritis even though I don't have psoriasis. She touched a few points on my body like my ankles, toes, shoulders and lower back. I about went kungfu on her with a couple of the spots as they hurt so much.
