I have had one failed surgery. I tried to get into the Norman Parathyroid Center in Tampa, FL and was told my first surgeon botched my throat and I can't have another surgery again on my throat. I was told I need to manage my calcium and vit d levels to manage the condition. I was devastated. I don't have a clue where to start. I would appreciate any suggestions what to do. My endo was clueless and don't think he is going to be of much help.

Hi Cozynana,
I clicked on in hopes of sharing a bit about a friend's experience with surgery, but then saw your situation is so very different. I am sorry, and I know how frustrating it is when the expert who should be able to help cannot.
Have you sought a second opinion, or gotten any recommendations for another doctor?
I hope and pray that someone on the site has some experience that can give you guidance and some comfort. Hearing what others have been through and how they managed things helps so very much.

cindy, thanks for your kindness. I am in the process of finding another doctor to see what we can do. It is very frustrating because I have great desire with a body that does not cooperate all the time. I am up and going one day and flat on my back a couple of days later. I hate it. Oh well, my lot to bear, so off I go, on to bigger and better. |

Cozynana been there done that. I hope what I can share will be of any help to you. my situation I know is different but bottom line may be similar.
I am on dialysis which contributed to the problem drs over most of past 10 years ignored it- well truth is didn't know what to do and ignored it I reached a critical level in my numbers became life threatening. I had a new dr who did know what to do. surgery had to be done. took all but 1/2 of a parathyroid. that had to be transplanted in my right arm (non dialysis arm) they do that for dialysis people.
well next problem dr who did it I don't think he was very good. It has been about a year and half now and still once in a while have trouble swallowing still. was a very slow healing process more than should of been! so I understand what your saying about your throat. I didn't know at the time that there is a newer better technique and this dr I had did the old way of cutting your throat all the way across. new technique makes a small incision instead.
You do have to watch calcium levels. if too high or too low you can have problems. can be serious problems. if too low can be deadly and you can zone out. that happened once to me and I went into a kind of seizure. too high has its problems too and so you need a dr who can recommend a balance with the calcium & vit D etc.. to keep your numbers where they should be. for me it has been a juggling act to get that accomplished. I will have to take the calcium supplent rest of life. I am not sure how it might affect you. If you can find a good dr who can help you manage the calcium levels you should be ok I would think.
I would see another dr and just see what he may have to say. Best of luck to you !!!

Kem I read another post made earlier than one I saw. I have been struggling with feeling good since the parathyroid ordeal. NO energy! I was told I may never be better than what I am right now. that was NOT what I wanted to hear!! I was always active and now well had to quit working doing my pony rides. I don't do but a fraction of the house work I used to do. we are trying to get me stronger but feels like a downhill battle many days. I have been in a position past 3 years I have cheated death so many times we have lost count. twice I had one foot in heaven and they pulled me back. Everytime I go around a dr I am the worse for it. I have to daily focus on getting stronger. and do WHATEVER it takes to do that. What has helped me some and doing better is finding me again! I got back to the farm here with all the wonderful sisters, getting back to doing the things I once loved and had it taken away, I dress up doesn't matter if I am doing dishes or what.. just a frame of mind to pick myself up. I do what it takes to feel better in a day. I like to do chi gong when I get up in the morning if I can that is good to help balance your energy levels. I have a dvd by debrah davis (found it at 1/2 price books) it is wonderful. I listen to healthy music, tones affect our body and mental well being. I am able to walk again took a while I was so down. find what makes you happy and DO IT. I don't care anymore what most people think of me.. being a bit essentric sometimes in being me. ha I wear what I want to wear if it makes me feel good even if I feel awful I still feel better with clothes I feel good in. I wear cheerful colors I got rid of about anything in my closet that was dark colors I keep everything around me positive as I can. I spend quality time with my animals. My wallabies are my therapy.
I refuse to let this condition I have to live with pull me down and take my joy and life from me. although some days it is very hard! I find when I get on the farm and read what sisters are chatting about and enjoy photos it lifts me up out of that dark place. I have been given a chance to try to get on the transplant list again for a kidney and waiting patiently right now to see if I do get on. I hope that may also help to improve my life. I take my herbs drink my teas eat healthy. I refuse to be depressed.
I hope this helps, I totally understand where you are and how difficult it can be.

Thyroid problems can be so debilitating, considering the thyroid is responsible for so many metabolic processes in your body. I would search high and low to find a good endocrinologist. A good one can turn your life around.

The thing with parathyroid issues is different from thyroid issues. a different organ and affects you differently. cant be treated the same. I didn't know much at all a about it until I had to deal with it.
