Hello ladies! I plan on making some caramel apple bites this weekend for a party and would like to know if you have any tips to make this successful! In particular, do they need to be green apples or can they be red? Best caramel to use? Any other tips?

I like the green tartness with the sweet caramel. They seem to stand up better to the melon baller too.

I have heard that if you scuff up the surface of the apples with a clean piece of sandpaper the caramel, etc. will stick much better. This is probably most important on store bought apples because they all come with a coating of wax typically.

I've also always been curious to try the following recipe for the caramel you dip the apples in. It is a homemade version as opposed to having to unwrap all those caramels!!!

I was going to say something similar...I soak mine in a vinegar rinse (bowl of water with vinegar) before the caramel to remove the wax (even on organic) so the caramel "sticks". Be careful not to cut the fruit open as it seems to make them go bad quickly.

Good luck! Yum!

My apples were not a success. But, I plan to keep at them until I get them to work. Caramel apples are my favorite and I so badly want to make my own. I will have to try some of these other ideas. Thanks Jamie for the recipe. Unwrapping all those individual caramels was a pain and I would love to have a homemade version. Nicole when you soak your apples in the vinegar rinse does it change the taste of your apple?
