I was mulching my garden this morning, and checking for root damage after a squirrel fiesta happened in my garden a few days ago and I found a massive colony of white, bulbous mushrooms (they weren't eggs, because they had roots) surrounding one of my garlic plants.

I should have taken a picture, but was so creeped out by them that I put on some gloves and pulled them out. There were so many, I struggled to carry them all in two hands! They were plain white with small roots, I'm guessing maybe they hadn't erupted from the soil yet? Or is there a mushroom that grows just below the surface of soil without pushing up? They were almost on top of each other, not spread out like a fairy ring. I'll be checking the rest of my soil in the next few days (I'm heavily pregnant and can only do so much gardening in a day ).

Has anyone dealt with this before? What did you do about it? I pulled out the ones I saw, sprinkled cinanamon over the remaining roots and soil, and mulched (with hay).

Thank you in advance for any help!

We live in mushroom country up here in SE PA -- there are many many "mushroom houses," as they call them, where they grow them commercially. Most times, if we buy some garden additives or mulch, there will be some spores on the loose! We generally just pull them up or grind them under our heel when we see them. Maybe we're used to them, so they don't creep us out too much.?

Not sure where in Texas you are, but have you had that damp weather? Did that maybe bring out the spores?

If this is the first time you've seen them, you probably did the best by just yanking them. I doubt that they would inhibit your garlic and as long as you don't eat them, they shouldn't hurt you.

And I really like the idea of a squirrel fiesta!

I'm near Houston. We just had Hurricane Patricia drop 8 inches on us, so that would make sense! I just hadn't seen them colonize so thickly in one area before. It didn't seem to effect the garlic, but I wanted them out regardless!

Thanks, I'll just keep an eye on the area.
