Jill I did see your email and hear about the strike. December was a very challenging month on the Homefront so I got behind on my correspondence (and everything else). Keep me posted on the situation (no pun intended lol)

Hey Krista! I just submitted my intermediate Farmgirl Spirit and Gaining Ground badges. I need to submit my beginner community service badge and a few others and am about to start sewing some aprons. For my nellie Will Do I decided I want to learn how to mend, alter, embellish, and sew my own clothes. I took the "Mindful Wardrobe Project" from Sew Liberated as a starting point o I could define my style and learn some foundational skills for mending and altering. I also mended the hem on several pairs of my son's jeans (my first time doing it) I used a technique that will allow us to easily let out the hem later on if he gets a growth spurt. I darned a couple of holes in some sweaters, and such. So need to submit that one. For the intermediate I am trying out sewing pajamas first as well as taking some thrift store jeans and doing some patches and shashiko on them. I scored a bunch of free fabric so I can make some tops and dresses too but really trying to make sure I take a skill building approach and not try to jump to a difficult project and get discouraged.

I also need to build my little free library to do the expert bibliophile badge - I scored some free materials just trying to work out the design. And I have accumulated enough free brick to make a little patio for my garden hopefully over the next couple months while it's cool in South Texas. I am working on my Texas Master Beekeeper Apprenticeship Level and will get two new nucs in April. I found a bee club and actually taught a gardening class for them in exchange for store credit :-) I have two work trips coming up so will do some knitting or embroidery on the plane. I want to knit myself a top for my expert level. I found some super quite 1940's style patterns and some super soft yarn. Knitting my daughter a shawl for her birthday in September as well (that should be pretty easy). So basically working on lots of badges lol.

You've been busy Shennandoah! I'd love to see some pictures of your finished altered jeans when you get them done.

I did not post this as a UFO before but it surely is. I just recently finished it after over 5 years. I struggled with Needlepoint as I had never had done it before. I can embroider and cross stitch but needlepoint eluded me! I was so frustrated I went to a friend at the Library where I worked and ask for her help. I still did not get it and she was flabbergasted and could not understand why I was not getting it and she gave up, rightly so. Finally I set down late last year and just really followed the pattern and guess what it clicked. Here is the finished piece waiting to be framed.
I am proud that I finally finished it.

That is really pretty! I don’t understand needlepoint, either. Congratulations!

I have a question. I am working on my Reading, ‘Riting and ‘Rythmatic beginner badge.
It says using my library or books I own, pick out 3 in 3 categories: fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Then read them. They mean I only need to read 1 book in each category for this badge correct?
Thank you

I understood it to be 3 books in each category.

That's beautiful, Debbie! I've never tried needlepoint before, but I had a similar experience when I was trying to learn to crochet. I was reading the book wrong and having so much trouble. I figured out the basics of knitting and told my mom I was DONE with crochet I'll just be a knitter. We then spent a couple hours on the phone and I finally got the hang of it. Now I LOVE to crochet and only knit once in a while.

I understand reading things wrong Heather believe me. I want to knit socks again so Maria is helping me. Over the years I have made 5 pairs of socks for others now I want a pair. Oh but it is amazing how much I have forgotten and that’s because I am so much older now. I can crochet and knit, I love knitting but crochet is faster. Right?

I do both and whether one is faster than another all depends on what is being made and how it drapes. Crochet produces a stiffer cloth than knitting. Knit is good for large pieces of clothing because it drapes very well. Crochet is better for three dimensional objects such as dolls and amigurumi. The big trend this year is mixing knit and crochet in the same project.

Marie - My Granddaughter loves to do both. I'll bet that she would love to combine them in a project as she is also very creative! Thanks for the info and idea!

How are your badges coming for the year? I have my list of badges I want to work on this year, I just need to get started. I think this summer my kids will start working on their badges as well!

Hi, All! I am making a list of badges to work on. I want to do some of the ones that get me outdoors more. I would like to finish the Bird badge, the Tree badge, and work on the Civic Heritage badge. I am continuing to work on my UFOs. . .there seem to be a never-ending supply of those! I want to keep learning and doing!

Nancy, those sound great! I can't wait until spring arrives and I can get some more outdoor time. I want to do some garden badges this year.

I agree Marie! We need more hours in the day.
