Okay, I am recommending a book for the club. It is A Nose For Murder by Lee Charles Kelley.

Jack, the main character, is an ex-cop who now trains dogs. He can't pass up a good murder investigation and has some dog friends to help him. This is the first book in the series. Kelley's novels are best described as a combination of murder mystery, romantic comedy and dog training manuals, as they include comic, sometimes even farcical scenes, along with dog training tips, all woven into the mystery and suspense.

I believe we all can enjoy it. My copy has only 267 pages.

I am afraid that I will have to bail out for now on the book club. I am starting my last semester and my workload is very heavy. When school is out in May, I will come back and see what is going on.

Great pick Marie. I don't have a working computer anymore, so, I am using the library one. ... bummer. So I only get on one every week or so.

I'm sure if this is the "official," selection
but I'm going to go ahead and get it from the library. Thanks, Marie!

I've read 1 and one half chapters and I am a little disappointed with the writing style but I will stick this one out if only for the dog training tips.

Just found your book club and would like to join. I may just follow along with this one and catch you up when you start the next as you all have started. "Garden Spells" sounds like it was a fun, read that everyone enjoyed. I love reading and always have a stack from the library.

I am almost half way through A Nose for Murder and the story is getting interesting. I really appreciate the advice on training dogs also.

Seems as if the deceased has an ex-husband, older sister and younger sister and she was pregnant. The local police, sheriff and the deceased's lawyer seem to be hiding something. The deceased had left all her wealth to her dog but was about to change her will. All very interesting clues.

I'm also about halfway through A Nose For Murder. The dog training info is fascinating! I hope to finally finish it this week.

I finished the book. I liked the mystery and it was solved in an interesting way. I did not like the writing style. It was too cheeky and tried to sound too much like a hard boiled detective novel. The dogs were great.

Safe to say dogs are always the best part of every book! Or the cats. :) As long as they don't get killed off. But I do love a good cozy mystery! Thanks for choosing this one, Marie.

I finished the book last night, and it was very interesting how they figured out who the killer was. The doggies were, of course, the best part by far! I agree, Marie, the writing style was a little uncomfortable, but overall I enjoyed it. I just started reading the classic "Howard's End" but would love to see what this group will be reading next. I always have several books going at once!

Here it is. I've requested a copy from our library, and hopefully it will come soon. I like reading YA books once in awhile, there is something purely open about them. Can't wait to get started!

The Mermaid's Sister
by Carrie Anne Noble

2014 Winner — Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award — Young Adult Fiction

There is no cure for being who you truly are...

In a cottage high atop Llanfair Mountain, sixteen-year-old Clara lives with her sister, Maren, and guardian Auntie. By day, they gather herbs for Auntie’s healing potions. By night, Auntie spins tales of faraway lands and wicked fairies. Clara’s favorite story tells of three orphan infants—Clara, who was brought to Auntie by a stork; Maren, who arrived in a seashell; and their best friend, O’Neill, who was found beneath an apple tree.

One day, Clara discovers shimmering scales just beneath her sister’s skin. She realizes that Maren is becoming a mermaid—and knows that no mermaid can survive on land. Desperate to save her, Clara and O’Neill place the mermaid-girl in their gypsy wagon and set out for the sea. But no road is straight, and the trio encounters trouble around every bend. Ensnared by an evil troupe of traveling performers, Clara and O’Neill must find a way to save themselves and the ever-weakening mermaid.

And always, in the back of her mind, Clara wonders, if my sister is a mermaid, then what am I?

I just finished reading The Mermaid's Sister. Such a wonderful book full of gentle magic. I believe the main lesson of this story is that it is never right to tell a lie even if its purpose is to make someone feel better.
