Hi all. One of the most important bits of advice I got when I first became a new parent (10 years ago now) was that to keep sane I really needed a "herd." This meant a group of kindred spirits or like-minded friends that I could turn to or chat with or just laugh with. I moved across the country, literally off an Island onto the middle of the Canadian prairies.
It's different. I need a new herd. I'm into gardening, not-very-skilled craftiness, writing, a lot of reading, and frugal living. I am restarting a blog that used to make me very happy. I work at a library and an animal shelter. I like variety in my life.
I am happy to be here.

Welcome, Steph! Bless your heart, except for the fact that you live wa-a-a-ay above me, we have an awful lot in common. Looking forward to hearing more about your 'variety' and, I think you've found your "herd."

"Herds" are delightful, and we are so glad you decided to join us here on the Farm! I am not sure I ever have heard of the necessity of a herd,but it completely makes sense! Being a part of this herd has been a blessing for me, and I pray the same may be true for you!

Welcome Steph to the MJF "Herd"!! I am excited to learn more about what happens up in your neck of the woods. I am way down here in Florida so your part of the world is totally different. There are a few other Farmgirls from Canada so it is great to have another join from our northern neighbor of Canada. Keep us posted on what is happening on your Farmgirl project list. I would love to hear more!!

Hi Steph,
I'm new here, too. What island did you move from? We normally live on a sail boat, but have been landlubbers for two years in New Hampshire where we have been very lonely. Finding Farm girls has changed so much for me. I have already received 3 handwritten letters from Farm Girls, which has meant more to me than they can know. Next year we plan to move back on the sail boat and head up to Nova Scotia, so I wondered if you were from one of the islands. I hope that being a Farm girl will help you feel more confident with your crafty skills. Try making the jubilee apron. If you go to a thrift store and look out for a narrow curtain with a channel for a curtain rod, all you'll have to do is fold up the bottom to make the pockets and thread some tape through the rod channel and voila!! an apron.

And Winnie wrote the other two!! Thank you Winnie for the cups of tea. I'm going to need them as it's got even colder now in New England, but those leaves!! It's like driving through a Cathedral of stained glass.

Thanks, Clare. It is nice to hear another person use the term "landlubber"! I am from Prince Edward Island, just like Anne of Green Gables. But we also lived on Cape Breton Island, which is part of Nova Scotia, one of our fave places on earth. We actually have some friends from there who are sailing all the way down the eastern seaboard which would be so amazing.
I think if you lived on a sailboat you should write a book about that :)

Oh, and I am already thrilled , just because someone mentioned real letters, in the mail and all. Such a rare thing to find people who still write letters but there really is nothing to compare to getting a juicy letter in the mail.

Steph - Real letters are not yet a thing of the past. I think you will find many hear who still write them. It's just IN some of us, I guess. It's always been a special thing among my relatives, and my friend of 52 years and I have written at least once a month for 50 of those years. Hang in there and encourage your friends. :)
