Hello ladies. I know I haven't been on MJFG in a long while. Hoping my time gets freed up soon. Anyway, who lives in MI? What about the UP? Can you tell me about it? What do you grow? Do you do anything special? Livestock??? Orchards???

I live about 1 hour from the bridge on the East side of Michigan. So, that makes me about an hour from the U.P. I grow vegetables and herbs. Our climate is cold and lots of snow, so, I have to have hardy perennials, to make sure they come back every year. I am trying to stay away from annuals since we have a short growing season, I would have to start them ahead of the time in the house. We did have Goats and a sheep along with my chickens. Now I just have chickens. My dad moved in with us last year and he needs a lot of care, so, I just did not have time for the animals anymore. but, a baby goat is just the cutest thing ever!!! Hey there DandeeRose!
I have lived in the UP most of my life. It is a special place, but one that can be a bit tough to grow on. The winters are harsh and depending on where you choose to move they can last anywhere from Oct-May (where I live the snow stopped flying last year in April, and I live in the "banana belt!").
Now, this isn't to discourage you! There are a few really great farmers up here and depending on what you choose to grow/harvest, there can be an amazing reap. Apples grow amazingly here. The cold weather really makes for some of the best apples I have ever eaten. Come October, I am greedily gobbling them down. Most animals do just fine up here as long as you make accommodations for them in the winter. Pumpkins, squashes, rhubarb, berries, cabbages, etc. grow like weeds here. The two problems you may come in contact with are rocky soil and sandy soil. Both are pretty abundant here. I also hear that pears grow great too!
If you can work with the land and climate- respect it for what it is and how it works- you will find that your growing does just fine. Of course there are things that just do not grow well here without hot houses, but so many other things do!
It really is such a wild, special place full of hard working, kind, and stubborn people. I would love to start a farm here one day myself and I am encouraged to see another person wishing to do the same!
