Hi,my name is Lydia and I live in Sebastopol, California, a small town in Sonoma County, California. I live on a 2.5 acre farm with my husband and two dogs and 6 box turtles. We have a wonderful orchard full of fruit and we raise our own vegetables. I love to cook and at harvest time I am busy doing a lot of canning. I love doing crafts-upcycling finds from junking expeditions with my buddies. Also enjoy birdwatching and wildlife.

Hello Lydia and welcome! I've never been to Sonoma County, CA but I have heard many things about what a beautiful area it is. What fruit trees do you have in your orchard? And box turtles... HOW FUN!

I have lived in California all my life. Born and raised in San Francisco. My husband retired and we moved to our little farm in 2011. In our orchard we have Gravenstein, Granny Smith and Fuji apples, Santa Rosa Plums, Bartlett Pears, Nectarines, and three different types of peaches. We have Pinot Noir grapes growing on the fence down our lane which I pick and extract the juice from and make grape jelly. Also make lots of jams and preserves with our fruit. I dehydrate some of the apple slices too.

Thank you for your nice welcome. It is nice to meet a fellow canner. I love coming up with new ideas. I make a killer zucchini-basil soup. Unfortunately, the gophers destroyed all my zucchini plants this time, so sadly, not enough zucchini to can! Darn little varmints! :(

We live right in the heart of wine country. Many of our neighbors have hobby vineyards and there are a lot of large vineyards close by. We have apple, pear, peach, plum and nectarine trees in our orchard. I have had my box turtles for over 20 years. The first one I got while working with wildlife rescue at the local animal shelter. I just kept bringing them home....until my husband said, "That's enough!" I currently have 6.

Now we sound even more alike, Lydia! I talk to everything, have always been that way. God's critters are so special. People get a kick out of it when they come here and I tell them to be careful and not step on ****.

I once raised two lizards through the winter, on a closed in porch, in an old hat filled with Spanish moss and they drank water from a bulb syringe. They would come to me when they saw it. Then spring came and they moved out.

Wow Wanda, we sound like identical twins separated at birth! Ha! We have lots of lizards roaming around and I talk to them and they stop and look back at me like they are listening! I feed the birds and talk to them and make bird sounds and I swear they talk back! They all wait up in our old walnut tree while I fill all the feeders chirping at me to hurry up because they are hungry!

They do listen and understand, Lydia! It's just that most people don't see them with their hearts, like we do, so they don't understand that.

There is one Cardinal who is always on post in the morning and lets the others know when breakfast is served (I feed some raccoons at night but have to take the feeder down so they don't break it).

You go girl!...We are f-a-m-i-l-y!

Welcome from a fellow Californian! I've always wanted to do more canning...please share what you're working on come harvest time.
Curious if you've deviated from your normal summer garden because of the drought. We ended up scaling back quite a bit this year. I'm ready to start the rain dances!

Hi Rhi! Our veggie garden is not doing as well as in past years-possibly because of the drought. The gophers ate the summer squash and zucchini plants at the roots and our tomatoes are not looking so hot. I do have TONS of cucumbers and I have two huge crocks full of Polish Pickles curing. I will be canning these very soon. I am usually busy at harvest time canning lots of different tomato sauces. Not this year. I have a bunch of peaches in my refrigerator and will be making some jam tomorrow. I am ready to do some rain dances too!!!
