It is about that time of year again for our farm, to combine oats. I took these last year. We use our antique combine which still works. Not perfectly but we get oats in the hopper! Looking forward to another harvest in a week or so. Thought you might all like the view!

found this picture from this spring. 6 generations have picked rock on this farm! As you can see by the rock pile there is plenty of rock around. The pile is one of 3 in our top fields. This was how we spent Mothers day! Ended with a picnic!

Your farm is beautiful Michele! Love the views and the fact that you have continued the farming tradition our great-grandparents started!

What a glorious set of pictures!!!!! Love how it is multiple generations, passing on the values and traditions!!! And the picture of the harvesting - WOW! Is there anything as serene??? We love our oats around here... steel cut oats for breakfast, old fashioned oats for granola, quick cooking oats for crumbles and no bake cookies, and oat flour for baking (we are gluten free). I may have to look into growing oats one day... not sure where they grow or how hard it is to grow them... in fact I know nothing about it, but am always willing to learn :) Seeing it sway in the breeze must be so calming!

Good luck baling hay Michele! Hope the rain holds off for you. I don't know how you can manage the farm, animals and a full-time job outside of the farm. You are amazing!

Michele, I absolutely love your pictures and hearing about your harvest! Please keep sharing, it's so fascinating for those of us who don't live on farms. Thanks so much! :)

the oats are combined and the straw baled and in the hay mow. nice to have it all done and put away. my youngest son helped by raking and driving the baler. I had texted him asking if he could help me bale today. Hummmm.....he shows up in shorts and flipflops. He told me he didn't realize I was square baling today. I said why would I ask you to help me round bale...haha I do that by myself! We had fun anyways. No I have never tried using the oats for people food. I really don't know anything about processing them for that. I do use them in my animal grain. It is something I would like to learn more about.

Glad you got everything done and tidied up so fast Michele! Maybe you can read up on using oats for people over the winter, providing you can find a moment to catch your breath. Glad your son could help anyway, in spite of how he was dressed and more importantly, that you two had fun together.
