Family Matters:  What would you do- Summer Camp for teen???  |

Isabelle is 13 this year. There is this summer camp, it is ministry based, a horse camp.http://hgmmission.org I REALLY want her to go. I wasn't financially able to send her last year, and this year I can. I truly feel it would be such an amazing experience. I know it would be fun. She doesn't really want to go...????!!!
A few reasons that she is reluctant are, likely, A. wearing something that covers her legs, B. b/c of a negative camp experience, and C. b/c she likes being alone quite a bit. A least, I think these are her reasons.
A. She wears skirts, below her knee. She isn't comfortable at all in jeans, pants, shorts, ext... She CAN wear leggings under her skirts, but she doesn't like those either. :/
B. A few years ago, she went to a Christian camp, it was boring, and the did silly things, like baseball, where the bases were food you slid into.
C. She ALWAYS has her nose in a book. We homeschool and she doesn't get out a lot. We meet with other homeschoolers 2-3 month. So she has friends, but she isn't into being around them all the time, she prefers her space and quite. And her books. To me, this is more of a reason TO go. Especially since the family that runs the camp is also a homeschooling family.
Should I just say you are going, that's final?? What would you do??

Here is my opinion - and since I "know" you, I'm going to be pretty blunt ;) IF it were me, I would NOT force her to go.... it sounds more like something you are interested in, rather than her... and you cannot force your dream on your children. I have a bookworm her age that prefers skirts, her space and to be with the family... so our answer is family activities... with other families that have children my children's ages. But I cannot see me forcing Katie to go to that kind of thing! In fact, we leave those type of options up to her... I present the pros and cons of going, but let her, as a budding maturing young lady, to make those type of decisions for herself. If you are worried about the socializing aspect... my questions are a) does she have a difficult time engaging in conversation once around others her age and b) does she have a difficult time around adults? Katie doesn't do as well around kids her age.... but does fantastic with older teenagers and younger adults, as well as being "motherly" to younger children. She finds kids her age to be more immature, though she just puts it as "we have nothing to talk about." Yet she finds plenty to discuss with older girls (and not boys or anything like that... just life). There is my two cents worth ;)

Yes, I would LOVE to go, but thing is, she DOES love this type of atmosphere. She really likes the family and loves horses. She engages ok with others her age on some things, but in other areas not so much. Sometimes it is like she is 16, others, like she is 10. It's crazy, but I know t has a lot to do with not being around PS kids her age. She has NO interest in boys, makeup, shopping, etc... things girls her age typically do. She would rather walk in the woods barefoot and climb trees.

LOL! Sounds like a typical preteen! If she is saying she guesses she will go, then it sounds like you have an answer... that she will go... no forcing, no coercing... sounds like she is apprehensive, but willing to go :)

Shannon, perhaps your daughter would prefer a different summer activity more along her interest lines. Could she volunteer at the Public Library? Maybe she could read to children or help shelve books and help at the front desk? How about volunteer help at the local hospitals? There are often summer programs for teens and they help in the units by doing things like putting packets of information together, getting patients fresh water, playing with children on the pediatric units etc. If you want her to get out and have some new experiences, perhaps there is something locally she would enjoy that includes her personal interests and choices.

Alicia--you are correct, I was talking with you! Oops Shannon, sorry if this made no sense. LOL! Alicia, good luck with finding a good experience for your teen. It is such a hard and awkward age and sometimes hard to know what would actually be a success. I hope your daughter will have a great summer no matter what she decides to do!

Perhaps having her go to an eco-camp for kids. I know these exist and have provided a few links here.

It may be too late to register for these since many of them require applications be received in March or April. Perhaps she could get some outdoor experience by volunteering on an organic farm or in and around a greenhouse. All of these things must be planned in advance. I would suggest sending for the information for your daughter to ponder during the winter to make plans for summer. I also believe she should make up her own mind where to go. I did.

We organic garden here. lol. I guess you would have to understand my daughter. See, we hobby farm, sustainably, compost, raise small animals, and garden/ forage, etc... She actually IS going to the camp I mentioned. The issue, I truly believe, isn't the KIND of camp, but the fact that it is more than 2-3 days. She is done after a few day, even on vacation she gets ready to just be home.
She got these a couple of days ago!!! She says, "Well, you want me to go, so I will, and I will probably love it!"

Hi Alicia, there is nothing trickier than dealing with a 13-year-old girl! Sometimes a child, sometimes a woman, and often not really able to express strange new feelings inside. Now as a complete outsider, I think it sounds like she really would like to try, but is afraid, and she might want you to push her just a little. Sometimes they still need us to help them go in the right direction, especially if it looks a little scary and unfamiliar. Mine still does occasionally, and she's 35! Anyway, that's my two cents. Glad she's going to try, and look forward to an update. Hope she loves it!
