So for Mother's Day, I asked for some cane fruits. I have been researching and trying to learn/ decide what is best. I have about a 15 ft area to grow them. At first I wanted a raspberry, black raspberry, and thornless blackberry. But I am learning that they transfer disease if planted together. What are your experiences? Which berries do you grow?

I lean toward black raspberry if I have to choose one. I like them best. But Red Raspberry leaves have medicinal use as well. Matt thinks blackberries would sell best (guess he thinks we will have over abundance??).

We have Thornless blackberries and this will be the first year we will have any amount of fruit----so we will see what happens. We have some Gooseberries too. I didn't know they could transfer disease---I'll have to look into that. We also have some Justaberries---a cross between a Gooseberry and Currant I think.

Alice, you could check with the Chicago Botanical Gardens website for advice on what to grow together. I love their orchard/vegetable garden, as well as every other garden there. I've emailed questions to them in the past and always have received an immediate response. Good luck finding what works best for your yard.
