I am going to be a Great, Great Aunt to a baby girl. I would like to make her a rag doll that will last a long time, with the normal wear and tear of a little girl. Can anyone tell me a good pattern to use, one that is child safe.
Thank You Peggy |

Congratulations for being a great great aunt!!!! http://www.marthastewart.com/264299/black-apple-doll has a nice pattern for an infant aged child (I try to avoid yarn hair or anything like that until the child is older, because ALL of my kids have put it in their mouths!!!) Hope that helps :) I ussualy at least sew the seams to prevent it falling apart... and use pretty fabrics for the body to stimulate a dress. I have even added different types of hair :)

Thank You Shannon. I looked up the web site and really like the doll. I know I remember my daughter loved her rag doll and chewed on it. I never though of reinforcing the seams so will do that also. I think the doll will be so nice for the baby as she grows and will love to cuddle something soft.

hey Peggy, back in 2008 (I think it was 2008) a small handful of us MJF gals spent the weekend at MaryJane's farm,, crafting, eating, drinking tea and having a wonderful weekend full of silliness and laughter.... several of the gals spent the nite(s) in MaryJanes tent cabins, while Brenda and I camped in our RV's. It was a weekend full of unforgettable friendships and memories... (Thank you Maryjane) Now,, that I have been so long winded,,, one of the projects we did was to make rag dolls... Here is my Lucy~grace...
This is such an easy peasy pattern that you could modify,,, instead of adding yarn hair, why not do a row across the top of the head with French knots or just use fabric paint and 'paint on the hair... as well as the eyes instead of buttons. If I recall, I think there is a pattern in one of the 2008 MJF magazines... and if memory serves me correct (keep in mind,,, I am prone to moments of Oldheimers! lol!)... (I think) Frannie Moscher has a article in one of those back issue about doll making... Anyway,,, I just wanted to share another version of a simple rag doll...

oh and don't forget to 'autograph' your rag doll (I did on her back side)... to remind the recipient of your heartfelt love. Oh and yep, I also made Lucy~grace a wee belly button on her tummy... for whimsy sake.

I love the doll., she looks like such fun and something I just might make for myself. I don't think we are ever to old to like dolls. I will look through all my back issues for the dolls I loved hearing about the girls weekend at Mary Janes farm. Such fun. I like the idea of satin and silk. The baby's name will be Savannah Grace. My sister, the new babies grandma has been in Savannah, Georgia for the past 8 days by herself enjoying being a tourist. That is where the name Savannah came from. Thank You for the inspiration and fun. |

Grace, I found my back issue of MJ and saw the patterns for the rag dolls. Now that I looked, I do remember reading about them. I love them , I think I will make one for myself. it's a fun project. Thanks for reminding of them and for your input. |

It's a really nice article about the woman who made the dolls, pictures and pattern. Your grand-daughters will love them. Peggy |
