While out junktiquing yesterday I found this sweet 'Hen & Chicks' crochet doily... $2... & all Mine!

I stuffed bits of tissue inside the hen & her chicks so you can see it better.
I will hand wash it tomorrow, shape & dry and then re-stuff with tissue for display.

Oh how I wish I had the talent to crochet like this...

I wish I was there to examine it and figure out the pattern. You have quite a treasure here.

thanx Marie,
I've never seen one like this... I have a set of crochet 'fruit & veggies' and even some crochet chicks (that you fit over a plastic egg)

,,, but never seen one of these until yesterday.

Marie, I tried to take some close up pics for you...
looks like the wing and tail are a shell stitch and the body a ?double crochet, a long rectangle, then folded in half and stitched closed creating the open bottom.
as for the head,,, hmmm...
Hen...

Chicks...

I suspect the Hen & chicks were created first and then incorporated into the 'doilie'....

Thanks for the pictures. I would have to see the article in person to correctly figure it out. From what I can see, it appears as if the hen was made first then the doily was made to spread out from her bottom side. The chicks look to have been made in their entirety and attached in the round or made as part of the round. I searched for the pattern online and it seems as if many are looking for it. Maybe I should just visit you for a three day weekend to analyze the doily and test the pattern. Hmmmm . . . I'll get back to you on this.

Grace, such a cool find! I've never seen anything like it either. Such a sweet, farmgirlish (well, its a word now.) thing for you to do...taking the closeup!
You rock!

You really lucked out on a fantastic doily. I have tiny crocheted chickens I am using on a purse. I found them on a towel. Thanks for showing them.

Grace -- Your cute doily got me searching for a pattern. I came across a picture of one that was quite similar -- someone else had posted it on a crochet site several years ago to see if she could find a pattern. Evidently a lady had brought it to "grace" (see how clever I am so early in the morning after only one cup of coffee?) the Easter table at church and said it had been made some 60 years earlier. I kept reading the thread and someone else mentioned that the pattern had been in a magazine at some point in time. Still searching for a pattern, but I bet one of these clever ladies will be able to reverse engineer it from your wonderful clear photos. Ravelry had lots of 3-D doily patterns with flowers, but this one is especially cute. I might have to take a "crack" (like an egg, right?) at it myself. And now for more coffee.

Wow! What a find! It's gorgeous!

I admire people who can crochet! I cannot! I knit, but somehow my crochet technique leaves much to be desired!

Cheers!

Grace that is the cutest doily I have ever seen! Oh my, and perfect for Easter too!! What a bargain you got for $2. Can't you see some little paper easter grass between the hen and chicks with chocolate foil eggs peeking out? I sure wish I had one of these cuties!!

Marilyn, if you make one, please post a photo so we can see.
