Well -- it's technically not a thrift store find, but it totally could have been.
Anywhoo, aside from everything going down in the prayer forum {http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=67985}, I've been trying to stay busy creatively, both for my sanity, and for a little financial help through my Etsy.
My latest sanity project is this pair of jeans. I got them at Old Navy awhile back, and they are the style I usually wear, however, for some reason *cough* Doritos obsession *cough, hack, hack* they have always been just a tad snug in the thighs. Oddly enough, my newer pair is not like this... the Doritos became slimming??
At any rate, I saw some patched jeans on Pinterest, and have just needed a pair ever since. So when I almost scrapped these jeans in a recent minimalism binge, I decided to just use them instead. Besides, I have a ton of embroidery floss in an exciting variety of colors that I need to use.
So far, I cut up the outside seam of each leg, have embroidered these edges, folding down the cut side and hemming it in place. All of this had been done completely by hand. I do not own a sewing machine. You can see my progress here: http://instagram.com/lalau427
I'm hoping to luck into some old plaid shirts or neat fabric with a 70s vibe -- nothing too bright and loud, but not to soft, either. I already have fabric for the patches which will be added in later near the knees. One is a bandana in a lavender shade of purple with black and white bandana pattern on it. The other looks like black-n-white diner floors...
My plan is: Once I have the bigger fabric pieces, I will sew them on the inside of each leg to make the legs wider {bell-bottoms}. Basically, it will look like the jeans sort of opened up like curtains to show neat fabric.
I thought I'd post about the project here to see if anyone had done this before and might offer some tips / tricks?

That's Gingy at my knee... sorry for the shoddy photo. A little dark in here.

Hi Laura.I've never tried anything like before but I love the idea. Please post a photo of the finished product. It's so creative!
