It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this today. Around noon, we will be helping Henry cross the rainbow bridge. He's 14 or so years old and has been a part of our family for 8 years. We found him in a shelter and decided to make him a part of our family. The decision to have him put down has not been an easy one. I have been contemplating it for months. I knew the time was near last fall when he started having trouble walking. We watch him closely and in the last couple of days he has gone downhill rapidly. He can barely stand to potty - his legs shake so badly. He has to be carried up and down the porch steps to the yard as it causes him great pain to navigate the steps himself. He has a lost look in his eyes and the fire is gone from them. I can't stop crying and he's not even gone yet. Most would say he was a lucky dog to have been rescued from a shelter, but I am the lucky one for finding such a sweet, faithful companion who never left my side even in his last hours. Ending his pain is the last thing I can do for him though I don't want to let him go. My heart aches so much I can hardly stand it. I miss him so much even though he is still right beside me. It doesn't seem real. Thank you, Henry Doodles, for being in the shelter, for staring at me until until I stopped to look at you and most of all for being the best little dog I ever had the joy of knowing. I love you! You will always bee in my heart. You were that 'one' dog who made a difference. That one dog who touched my heart like no other. Grandpa will have a cookie for you on the other side, I'm sure.

You gave him a home and he gave you love. That's what dogs do the best. He knows you love him back.

Lora,
It is soooo very hard to say goodbye to our beloved pets! I will pray for you as you go through this.
I've done it many times and it's always so difficult! And your little farewell to him is so sweet!
Hang in there!
HUGS TO YOU!

Thanks, ladies. He crossed the rainbow bridge around 12:20 today. The vet gave him 3 shots and it was over. I held his paw until the last beat of his heart. We wrapped him in a warm blanket and brought him home. I chose a burial spot between 2 trees near the garden in the back yard. I can see the spot from the kitchen window. He was laid to rest facing east so the morning sun will shine on his face, but he is well protected from the harsh summer sun. I am going to get a concrete bench to put near the spot and plant some flowers there. I clipped a lock of his hair to put in a locket. What make me even more sad is that today is also the 1 year anniversary of my grandfather's death. I've asked him to look out for Henry and take care of him up there.

Lora, I am so sorry for your loss. What a handsome fellow. Thank you for giving him a home and love, I'm sure the love was returned two-fold.
Hugs.

It's so hard to say good-bye to a beloved dog. Henry is waiting across the Rainbow Bridge and you'll see him again someday. Sending you my hugs.

I am trying to be the person my dogs think I am.

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.
