| I am having issues with my garden and have worried all winter how to remedy things. We have a white residue on the top of our soil. Our garden grew very nice vegetables that grow under the ground this year, but the ones that are above the ground did terrible, actually, worse that terrible. Our extension agent is not an option to help me, he is worthless. I need to figure out what is going on and try to fix it this year. On top of that, the moles have moved in. We have sunk some big plastic lick tubs in the ground and that has helped. I just want my old garden back, it did so well. My problems partially started when I brought in some composted dirt in from our county recycle place. We think it was tainted with chemical. I am going to try to dig it out and use new dirt. I would appreciate any suggestions. |

Anyway you can tarp it? Black plastic fixed so it can't come up and give it some heat and time. I too bought some compost from a so called excellent compost and really was a mess. Try your local gardens some time it is an easy fix like gypsum or turning in some plant matter grass clipping leaves straw. Good luck.

is the white residue powdery when rubed between your fingers, almost a chalky feel...if so, its probly calcium, and yes, most root veggys love it, rotatill your garden, adding just plain old dirt, mixing in the white powder, so it is not all in one area...

It could also be too much Lime in the soil not necessarily chemicals.
I would just bring in a good top-soil and mix it all together.
My Grandfather use to plant Castor Beans to keep moles away.
Oh, and just from personal experience. Gardens seem to do great one
year and poorly the next. No rhyme nor reason for it...just seems to
go that way. So rejoice when it's good and whine when it's bad...
we all feel your woes with you.

Even though the extension agent is no account you could just get a soil test kit from the extension office and usually you send it into the state headquarters for testing. It could tell you if you have too much or too little of a nutrient.
