This month has been unseasonably warm for this time of year! This weekend we had 60 degrees!!! It felt so nice and great to go out and expand our garden, but now I'm wondering if I should start planting? It's probably still too early and I would feel sad if we ended up having a random snow storm like last year... Wacky weather is good when it's nice but really messes up a gardening plan!!
Anyone else planting anything outside yet?

I would use this time to clean-up, measure, mark and plan. This will free up time when spring arrives. That's what I would do if Minnesota winters ever let up.

In my part of Texas English peas, onions, and other cool weather vegetables are being put in the ground now. I may get a bunch of onions to put in a large half barrel for green onions. I'll be planting herbs, flowers, & a couple of vegetables from March to the 6th of May. May is a little late, but I'm making an exception this year for 2 herbs. Everything has to be well established before June and the heat of summer sets in.

Down here near the Gulf of Mexico, we can start planting in Feb. There's usually a slight risk of another frost, but it doesn't usually happen.
If you're new to your area of Washington or just new to gardening, check with your local county extension office. They should have a calendar or chart of start and stop dates and even the varieties of plants you can grow. You can also check with a local garden club.
The main thing you have to watch for is another freeze/frost. You can probably put transplants and then protect them. But, seeds may not germinate because the soil isn't warm enough yet.

I think we've decided to just focus on expanding our patch this year and then stick with a regular planting schedule! This lackluster winter here is throwing me out of whack! We've hit an old pile of roofing shingles! So now we've got to dig down farther than we thought and make sure none of that stuff is left behind in our garden! Drives me batty when I see that kind of thing! Poor stewardship. But at least now its going be a beautiful garden and we've been diligent about picking up all the tiny pieces of roofing and properly disposing them. I do find it almost zen like while doing it, though!
