Hi all,

I've already made some post, but I wanted to 'officially' introduce myself. Our family (my husband Rob, sons Ben, Jonah, Seth, and Zeke) have been homesteading for nearly 20 plus years (hard to believe!). We've never had more than an acre or so, but we've enjoyed gardening, preserving, keeping chickens, maintaining a small emergency food storage 'program', and bread making (finally grinding rice and millet from grains bought in bulk so our son can enjoy a yummy gluten free, yeast free bread, yeah!). I've also enjoyed cross stitch, embroidery, and took up quilting a few years ago - lots of UFOs to work on this winter!

All this being said, we've never really fit in with our more 'typical neighbors'. My sweet step sister introduced me to MJF magazine a few years back and I was hooked! Finally, people who liked what I liked. Now that the boys are growing up, I'd love to spend more time getting to know everyone a bit more! So glad to be here : )

Hi there, Dena. Welcome! I love your attitude. You have squeezed so much onto and out of your acre. You sound like a 'make do with what you have' kind of gal. You'll have fun here.

Thanks Cajungal. I'd LOVE to have more, like 5 acres with goats, sheep, a cow...Hubbie has said that maybe that can be a retirement plan for us. For now, I've really been given all I can handle - anymore and it would have been too much with homeschooling and kids with special needs...so thankful for the opportunity to live this wonderful life of homesteading, even if it has been on a slightly smaller scale. Then again, being a farmgirl really is a condition of the heart.

Thanks Bonnie! We moved to this area about 8 years ago. Before then I had lived within an hour of here for most of my life, but never realized how much I would love living here. There is such a beauty about all the small farms and buggies as far as the eye can see.

My son and husband were in your neck of the woods a few years back and LOVED it! Although our area is mostly farm land, the farms are fairly small and close together. My son loved the vastness of the wilderness. He even considered attending college up there, but reconsidered as our relatively moderate winter made him feel very cold : ).

Thanks for the welcome!

Hi Dena!

Welcome - always good to see another PA farmgirl! I'm in Northeast PA in the Pocono Mountains, but I spend a lot of time down in Lancaster County. We have Amish friends that live in Leola, just outside of New Holland. We were there in November for the daughter's wedding - what an experience!

Hope you enjoy it on MJF as much as I do!

Hi Luanne!

So good to hear from you! I love living so near Lancaster Co. We were invited to an amish thanksgiving feast a week earlier than the traditional holiday (they were invited to a wedding on the actual holiday - ahhhh, Amish wedding month!). This is a family that we barely know, but they wanted to treat my husband because he had done a favor for them. Very wonderful to be exposed to such a rich culture!

We are about 20 minutes east of New Holland and have driven through it often. So beautiful to drive through all that wonderful farm country.

There's another mj farmgirl who lives in Levittown, near New Jersey. She also comes to Lancaster Co often. If you are interested, maybe the 3 of us could get together some time.

Blessings,

Dena

Glad you joined us Dena. I have 3 sons, two grown and own their own homes, the youngest is 11 and in 5th grade. Good luck with your UFO's. There's lots of great ideas posted here every day. We look forward to seeing what you are doing too.

Thanks Dawn.

Sounds like you have a bigger age span with your boys too.

Thanks for good wishes on my UFOs! I am currently working on a hanging quilt that has been 'hanging' on my quilting frame for 3 years! So far I have the batting and backing on and am slowing beginning to quilt it. This is so exciting to me because the bright, folk arty colors are so cheerful. When I finish it I will (try to) post it so everyone can soak in its rich colors!

Blessings on your day,

Dena

Dear Dena91,

My name is Anne Magee and I am also from Pa. I have been trying for a while to get a group of us together.

I have over the last year talked to some girls. I have a list of about 7 girls including me that I have spoke to. One girl is by you, two are by me and 2 in the poconos. I am thinking that the distance between all of us is really not that far. I thought that even if we did a once a month meeting, we could get together with some of these ladies.

What do you think? Should I contact these girls and ask them if they want to have a get together to see if it is even possible to start a group. I have there names.

Are you still interested?

Let me know what you think.

Yes! Yes! Please do Anne. For once a month the distance shouldn't be hard, especially if we rotate which area we gather.

Let me know what you find.

Thanks!
