A friend of mine's son-in-law bought a couple of sweaters at the thrift store. He washed them in vinegar to try to get a strong detergent cleaning chemical smell out of them, but the smell is still there. Does anyone have any suggestions on what he can do to get that smell out?
Thanks, Dawn in IL

This is going to sound horrible, but I actually wash them and hang them on the line outside - for about 48-72 hours! The sun bleaches out anything on them, and the fresh air seems to blow away the smell.
Thanks Shannon, I'm afraid sunshine is hard to come by lately. I will pass this one to him and see if he can take advantage of our warmup here in the Chicago area. Hopefully the sun will peep out for us.
My suggestion is to soak them in cold water with baking soda and Dawn dish soap - the blue original Dawn. Baking soda to remove any odor and Dawn to get out any oil/residue from the chemicals.

Thank you Sara. I'll let him know about this. The sun has decided to ignore IL lately, so this is a more doable option for this time of the year. I appreciate both of you helping out on this!
