With my husband coming from a Norwegian family, we started celebrating St. Lucia Day many years ago when my children were small. It was one of our favorite Advent celebrations. The usual foods served are the Saffron buns with hot chocolate or coffee, but today I decided to do something different. Warren's Nana Olsen made yummy light, pancakes with extra eggs and cardamon spice. They have been a family favorite here for decades. When I finally found some Lingonberry jam from Sweden yesterday at the grocery store, I decided to celebrate the day with Nana's pancakes instead of saffron buns. Oh my, Nana would have been proud!!

St. Lucia Day also has a new special meaning for me. It was the Dec. 2009 issue of MaryJanesFarm that had a feature article about the celebration at Lindsborg, Kansas. On the front cover was a photo of the St. Lucia Day procession. It was that photo that caught my eye and caused me to pick up my first issue of MJF. Low and behold, I read the magazine cover to cover and discovered I now had a way to be a Farmgirl even though I never lived on a farm!! Sign me up!!

The St. Lucia Day celebration is a festival of light with Christian and non-Christian traditions. In the nordic region, it is nearing the time of the Winter Solstice and return of the sun. How fitting that I discovered another "light" with the MJF magazine. The light that comes with honoring a part of myself and risking joining in with people I didn't know. Voila! Today, I am writing you as the FSOTY for 2014! What a blessing!

So, to all of you Farmgirls who also celebrate St. Lucia Day, God Yul!!

Winnie, you never stop amazing me. I didn't know about St. Lucia Day and now I do. The pancakes with Swedish Lingonberry jam sounds yummy.

I did know about St. Lucia day, however we've never celebrated it as a holiday. I'm of Scottish/Irish ancestry and we just observed St. Andrews Day on November 30th (sort of).
Thanks for sharing Winnie!

We do not celebrate St. Lucia Day, however, I have taught our children about it whenever we look at how different countries around the world celebrate Christmas. For those who have never known about it, here is a short youtube video I show the kids each time - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_BeRuS7qTs :)
