One of the things I truly look forward to this time of the year are the many traditions our family has started! Growing up, we really didn't have many, but for whatever reason, my hubby and I decided shortly after we had our first daughter to have many :)
Over the next few weeks, I thought it might be fun to share some of our various traditions. I think our first one is decorating on Black Friday, rather than shopping. All the children help with this, even our one year old! All the decorations are up, as well as the tree :)

When my son who, is now 41, gave me a musical Christmas card when he was nine. Each year after that we played it once on Christmas day for a few seconds. I still have the card and when Dustin is home for Christmas we play the card, but only for that few precious seconds in hopes that it will play forever.

We too do our decorating on Black Friday. Another thing our family does each December is pick a night, make Cocoa and small snack and head out to see all the Christmas lights in town. The girls and I make cookies each year for some neighbors.

When I was growing up, each of us had our own Advent calendar to enjoy. We never put up a tree until December 24 so the calendar was a very special part of the holiday to look forward to each day. When my children were little, we started the tradition of a church advent calendar and an Advent wreath on the kitchen table. Each day, we opened the little doors and read the scripture and prayers that went along with it. We also celebrated St.Nicholas Day and St.Lucia Day to mark special times within the quiet and prayerful season of Advent in our church. Today, I have a small candle and wreath with a book chosen for reading daily in the morning. Advent allows me to move slowly into December and keep me centered amidst the fast pace of the December days!

Growing up, we always made homemade vanilla ice cream on Christmas Day, then as we got older we made ice cream but then had root beer floats with it on Christmas day vs. just making the ice cream. We also put up our Christmas tree on Black Friday and decorated rather than shop. A tradition we started when we got married is I make special stuffed pancakes on Christmas morning after gifts and Christmas story. On our honeymoon we went to a mutual favorite restaurant and had one of their breakfast specials and we loved it so much we decided I needed to try to make it at home. I was able to make up a recipe that tastes just as, if not better, than the dish we found we loved on our honeymoon so I make it special every Christmas morning!!!! :)

The ladies in our family go to an Amish community every Black Friday. We shop,get a bite to eat and enjoy each other's company. Sure beats fighting the crowds. My son and I usually go to our town Xmas celebration if weather permits. It's become our own little tradition, just me and him. In a few days our house will turn into a candy factory and we'll give plates of candy to friends and co workers. I always make maple creams for my grandma, who always hides them in a drawer in the back of her fridge.

Another one of our favorite traditions is Advent - preparing ourselves for the celebration of the Coming of Christ. A few years ago I made a Jesse Tree. In addition to it, we are reading "Jotham's Journey." This is the first time reading this book, and the kids are really interested in what happens next, each night. Thankfully my kiddos are good about sitting quietly for books and reading a chapter or two of longer ones!
